Free Broadband and Wireless Internet for San Francisco's Public Housing Residents

Almost seven thousand of San Francisco's poorest families will be getting free broadband and wireless Internet. An initiative between the city's Department of Technology and the San Francisco Housing Authority will provide access for low-income families, seniors and the disabled living public housing.

According to their website, the HOPE SF initiative seeks to transform eight of San Francisco’s most distressed public housing sites into vibrant, thriving communities. That's a very big task, but HOPE SF says it will accomplish this by following a principled approach to development.

HOPE SF "hopes" to accomplish these stated objectives:

• Transform 2,500 severely deteriorated public housing sites into sustainable, mixed-income communities with neighborhood retail, community centers, parks, and playgrounds.
• Replace every public housing unit and add new homes to the eight project sites. The final mix of housing will include public housing, market-rate, and affordable rental and ownership housing.
• Respect the existing community. Rebuilding each site will occur in phases to minimize disruption to existing residents. Where possible, the project will accommodate on-site relocation.
• Plan collaboratively with residents and neighbors. An inclusive, community-led process will ensure that new sites meet the needs of current residents. Four sites are currently in planning stages.
• Catalyze neighborhood improvements so residents at all income levels can take advantage of new economic opportunities, improved schools, and community amenities.
• Provide Service Connectors to focus on the needs of individual households, linking them with appropriate services and tracking their progress.
• Reintroduce each site into the existing neighborhood fabric, ending decades of isolation from the surrounding community.
• Build green and ensure that every new unit has a superior urban design.
• Create a new financial model for public housing revitalization. Market-rate home sales will help subsidize the cost of public housing reconstruction.
• Implement best practices and avoid past mistakes by consulting continuously with nationwide experts and residents.
• Learn and improve implementation by engaging in rigorous self-evaluation during the process to achieve success.

The eight HOPE SF Sites. The (first five sites are HOPE SF target sites):
Hunters View
Potrero Terrace and Potrero Annex
Sunnydale
Westside Courts
Alice Griffith
Hunters Point
Westbrook/Hunters Point East

Good luck to HOPE SF. They have a massive task ahead. They are going to need all the luck and hope available to them in addition to lots and lots of money.

Behind the scenes at the White House video: Signing the Repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell"

From the White House blog:
posted by Jesse Lee

At the signing of the bill to repeal "Don't Ask Don't Tell" last week, the sense of history and enthusiasm was palpable throughout the audience.  While we were there we had a chance to talk to Captain Jonathan Hopkins, who was discharged under the policy, as well as Rep. Patrick Murphy who led the charge in the House of Representatives, and Melody Barnes who played an integral role here at the White House.  The video gives a glimpse of what it was like to be there.

This video is presented in wide-screen format so you can enjoy the fullness of this production. As result it may encroach on the right-side column of this blog.

Lockheed Martin will build 10 LCS for $3.6-billion -- the Navy's new Global Police Cruisers

The Navy just announced who will build America's 21st Century fleet. The Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin Corp. and Austal USA each a fixed-price incentive contract for the design and construction of a 10 ship block-buy, for a total of 20 littoral combat ships from fiscal 2010 through fiscal 2015.

The amount awarded to Lockheed Martin Corp. for fiscal 2010 littoral combat ships is $436,852,639.  The amount awarded to Austal USA for the fiscal 2010 littoral combat ships is $432,069,883.  Both contracts also include line items for nine additional ships, subject to Congressional appropriation of each year's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Program requirements.  When all 10 ships of each block buy are awarded, the value of the ship construction portion of the two contracts would be $3,620,625,192 for Lockheed Martin Corp., and $3,518,156,851 for Austal USA.  The average cost of both variants including government-furnished equipment and margin for potential cost growth across the five year period is $440 million per ship.  The pricing for these ships falls well below the escalated average Congressional cost cap of $538 million.

"The awards represent a unique and valuable opportunity to lock in the benefits of competition and provide needed ships to our fleet in a timely and extraordinarily cost effective manner," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

This award is a unique opportunity to maximize the buying power on the LCS Program by leveraging the highly effective competition between the bidders.  Each contractor's 10-ship bids reflect mature designs, investments made to improve performance, stable production, and continuous labor learning at their respective shipyards.  The award was based on limited competition between teams led by Lockheed Martin and Austal USA.  Under these contracts, both shipbuilders will also deliver a technical data package as part of the dual award, allowing the government a wide range of viable alternatives for effective future competition.

This approach, which is self-financed within the program by adding a year to the procurement and utilizing a portion of the greater than $2 billion total savings (throughout the Future Years Defense Program), enables the Navy to efficiently produce these ships at an increased rate and meet operational requirements sooner.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead praised the Navy's plan to add both ship designs to the fleet:  "The LCS is uniquely designed to win against 21st century threats in coastal waters posed by increasingly capable submarines, mines and swarming small craft.  Both designs provide the capabilities our Navy needs, and each offers unique features that will provide fleet commanders with a high level of flexibility in employing these ships."

The innovation and willingness to seize opportunities displayed in this LCS competition reflect exactly the improvements to 'the way we do business' in order to deliver better value to the taxpayer and greater capability to the warfighter.  Moreover, the Navy's LCS acquisition strategy meets the spirit and intent of the Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act of 2009 and reflects the Navy's commitment to affordability.  The benefits of competition, serial production, employment of mature technologies, design stability, fixed-price contracting, commonality, and economies of scale will provide a highly affordable ship construction program.

"The rigor and diligence of the source selection process has resulted in the acquisition of quality, capable ships at fair prices," said Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition Sean Stackley.  "This dual award strategy exemplifies the Navy's compliance with Secretary Gates' and Under Secretary Carter's direction to improve the buying power of the Defense Department.  Both teams have shown cost control on their second ships, and we look forward to the delivery of these capable fleet assets in the future."

The Navy remains committed to a 55-ship program and the LCS is needed to fill critical, urgent warfighting requirements gaps that exist today.  The LCS Program is required to establish and maintain U.S. Navy dominance in the littorals and sea lanes of communication choke points around the world.  The LCS Program operational requirements have been virtually unchanged since the program's inception in 2002 and the both hull forms will meet the Navy's operational warfighting requirements.

Some say they can still hear the cries. The Massacre at Wounded Knee was 120 years ago today

December 29, 1890 : U.S. Army massacres Indians at Wounded Knee

On this day in 1890, in the final chapter of America's long Indian wars, the U.S. Cavalry kills 146 Sioux at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.

Throughout 1890, the U.S. government worried about the increasing influence at Pine Ridge of the Ghost Dance spiritual movement, which taught that Indians had been defeated and confined to reservations because they had angered the gods by abandoning their traditional customs. Many Sioux believed that if they practiced the Ghost Dance and rejected the ways of the white man, the gods would create the world anew and destroy all non-believers, including non-Indians. On December 15, 1890, reservation police tried to arrest Sitting Bull, the famous Sioux chief, who they mistakenly believed was a Ghost Dancer, and killed him in the process, increasing the tensions at Pine Ridge.

On December 29, the U.S. Army's 7th cavalry surrounded a band of Ghost Dancers under the Sioux Chief Big Foot near Wounded Knee Creek and demanded they surrender their weapons. As that was happening, a fight broke out between an Indian and a U.S. soldier and a shot was fired, although it's unclear from which side. A brutal massacre followed, in which it's estimated almost 150 Indians were killed (some historians put this number at twice as high), nearly half of them women and children. The cavalry lost 25 men.

The conflict at Wounded Knee was originally referred to as a battle, but in reality it was a tragic and avoidable massacre. Surrounded by heavily armed troops, it's unlikely that Big Foot's band would have intentionally started a fight. Some historians speculate that the soldiers of the 7th Cavalry were deliberately taking revenge for the regiment's defeat at Little Bighorn in 1876. Whatever the motives, the massacre ended the Ghost Dance movement and was the last major confrontation in America's deadly war against the Plains Indians.

Conflict came to Wounded Knee again in February 1973 when it was the site of a 71-day occupation by the activist group AIM (American Indian Movement) and its supporters, who were protesting the U.S. government's mistreatment of Native Americans. During the standoff, two Indians were killed, one federal marshal was seriously wounded and numerous people were arrested.

Behind the scenes with the Kennedy Center Honorees: Bill T. Jones, Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Merle Haggard, more

Every year around the holidays, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts selects and celebrates individuals who have, through their lifetime achievement in the arts, contributed to enriching and enhancing culture in America.   On December 5th, 2010, the Kennedy Center Honors 33rd Annual National Celebration of the Arts was held and videotaped for a recent television broadcast. Before the gala event at the Kennedy Center, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a reception for this year's recipients in the East Room of the White House.

Watch this video which features behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the honorees at the White House - Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Merle Haggard, Bill T. Jones, and Jerry Herman.

In order to provide you with a full widescreen-format experience the video may encroach onto the right side column. I thought you might prefer to have the full view rather than a shortened TV-box version. But your best bet is to click the four-arrow icon to go to full screen.

CWO David Slobojan, 29th Master Cutterman of the U.S. Coast Guard

Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer David Slobojan was recognized as the Coast Guard’s 29th Master Cutterman aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Kukui Dec. 3, 2010.

About the photo: Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer David Slobojan, left, displays his citation with Lt. Cmdr. Bob Little, commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Kukui, as the Coast Guard’s 29th Master Cutterman.
.

Slobojan, formerly of Kalispell, Mont., currently serves as the engineer officer aboard the Kukui, with a cumulative total sea time of 20 years and five months. Throughout his career, Slobojan has served on land for only two years.

Master Cutterman Slobojan joined the Coast Guard in July, 1987 and became a machinery technician. His assignment history spans nine cutters, including the Polar Star, Elderberry, and Buckthorn. His most recent assignment was as engineer officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Fir, homeported in Astoria, Ore., where he was stationed for five years.

The Coast Guard’s Master Cutterman program was created in April 2007, to formally recognize those members who have distinguished themselves throughout their careers with more than 20 years of sea service. The first Master Cutterman certificate was presented to Chief Warrant Officer Paul Dilger at his retirement ceremony in July 2007. While many Coast Guardsmen have proudly been named as permanent cuttermen, serving more than five years afloat, only a select few have endured the rigors of sea duty for 20 years.

The certificate was signed by Adm. Robert Papp, Commandant of the Coast Guard, who has 14 years of sea service.

Pete Souza's White House Pic du Jour for December 26, 2010

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, along with daughters Sasha and Malia, sing during services at St. Michael's Chapel at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kailua, Hawaii, Dec. 26, 2010. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

Pete Souza is the White House Chief Photographer. He has the highest security clearance in the country. Number One. He goes wherever the President goes -- aboard Air Force One, riding with POTUS inside or very near the Presidential limousine in each motorcade, walking with the President behind the scenes and occasionally even into the private Obama family residence inside the White House. The entire photo collection of the daily life of the President is kept and becomes part of the public archives. They will eventually end-up in the Obama Presidential Library when it is established.

I declared myself as a Barack Obama fan and supporter in this post from October 26, 2006: Barack Obama, our Best Hope since RFK. I am following the President's remarkable journey closely and it is proving to be a deeply impressive experience. Barack Obama is absolutely destined to be recognized as one of the greatest of America's presidents. Of that I have absolutely no doubt. I am so fortunate to be alive at this point in history. Through the work of the White House Photographer we can all become eyewitnesses to this absolutely fascinating moment in history.

Every day Pete Souza posts a picture of the day on the White House website. I simply download and post Pete's choice for the day, or, Pete's Pic du Jour. It is a daily visual chronicle of the life of President Barack Obama. The office of the White House Photographer allows me, a plain doughnut kind of guy in San Francisco, to follow the daily life of the President inside the White House or aboard Air Force One or wherever on the planet he may be.

Pete Souza is the luckiest guy on eatrth. He landed a job as President Obama's White House Photographer. He is an "invisible" member of the family and of the staff. Pete Souza goes wherever Barack Obama goes. Not since Matthew Brady, who had the good fortune to photograph President Abraham Lincoln on a number of occasions, has a photographer had such an opportunity to be on the tip of the cutting edge of critically important American history.

PBS obtained permission (very rare permission) to tail Pete Souza wherever he went. The documentary, called The President's Photographer: 50 years in the Oval Office, provides a very rare and unique inside view of what it's really like to be tailing the President of the United States. There are some great shots of previous White House Photographers going back to the Presidency of Lyndon Johnson who started the tradition of documenting (almost) every minute of the President's life in office. The first real "member of the family" Presidential Photographer was Yoichi "Okie" Okamoto who did .

In the documentary you almost feel you are walking right along with Pete Souza, rushing right by the Secret Service and right up to the Boss. It is an impressive experience. Watch it at pbs.org/the-presidents-photographer/

The White House also has some interesting videos available online from a series called "Inside the White House".

e-waste recycling -- TV's, monitors, computers, laptops, copiers -- Recycler Finder

E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their "useful life." Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines are common electronic products. Many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled. Unfortunately, electronic discards is one of the fastest growing segments of our nation's waste stream.

Consumers of electronic products have a responsibility to buy smart, use right, and manage well. Computer monitors, televisions and other electronic equipment should NOT be disposed of with regular garbage. Working TVs, monitors, computers and other consumer electronics can be sold or donated thereby prolonging their useful life. Nonfunctioning TVs, computer monitors and other obsolete electronic products should be repaired or recycled by an organization equipped to handle them.

Find an ERecycle Center near you with this Recycler Finder

Also see sfenvironment.org (SF Dept of Environment) for much more information.

Christmas Tree Recycling and curbside pickup schedules for San Francisco

Here is the Christmas tree pickup schedule for San Francisco:
Before you put your tree out to the curb make sure you remove 100% of your decorations and tinsel. They may not pick-up trees that have too much "stuff" on them. Better to be safe than sorry. Strip the tree before tossing it out for pickup.

Very Special Message:

Thank you for being one of the people who cares enough to go online and try to find out how to recycle your tree. You have done more than many people who can't even be bothered doing a Google search as you likely did. Those are the people who end up tossing out their tree on some street corner late at night because they missed all their opportunities. Thank you for being one of the awake and alert people on our planet. Thank you!

I am a very proud member of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Sierra Club. Right now you can also become a full member at the steeply-reduced new-member rate of just $15 dues for the entire year. It's a New Year special offer. The Sierra Club will even send you a free rucksack that is a copy of the original 1892 Sierra Club design. And Sierra, the Sierra Club magazine goes to every member. Sign-up here and come aboard.

Kids with True Style - a photograph from 1941 Chicago

I found this magnificent photograph on the website of . I was so impressed by these young men. America was at war in 1941. Chances are their fathers were serving in the military. Chicago had one of the highest volunteer rates in the country. The future for these young men was uncertain when this photo was taken. But on that winter day in Chicago those were five very handsome and impressive young Americans.

Here's more from generic.

Economic Times compares Kamala Harris to President Obama. Calls her "Female Obama"

I was reading an article on the Economic Times website. Economic Times is an Indian publication with a global reputation and standing.

That's when I spotted it.

The headline was: Indian-American Kamala Harris "female Obama" in making

The Article quickly went on to compare Kamala Harris to President Obama and offered quotes from both Politico.com and Chris Lehane that were both well made points.

This is the first time I've seen Kamala compared to the President and it is the first time a world-respected publication has seen Kamala as being on a track to the White House.

I so very much hope they are right.

Orthodox Christmas is January 7th -- more time, better sales, less stress!

Did Christmas sneak up on you? Do you wish you had another week or so to get ready and really enjoy the peaceful and relaxed holiday Christmas should be?

Well, have I got good news for you ...

Welcome to Orthodox Christmas -- January 7, 2011

The Orthodox Church is officially the Orthodox Catholic Church. But don't call them Catholic. They have nothing to do with the Pope in Rome. The common name for the church is the Eastern Orthodox Church. There are divisions within that group that mostly reflect the nationality or ethnic group of its  members. All together there are are about 300-million Orthodox in the world. They are second only to the Roman Catholic Church. You will find the primary Orthodox Churches in San Francisco listed below.

Orthodox Christmas is based on the Gregorian calendar and it sets the date as January 7th -- and all this is terrific news. Just think:

-- you can take advantage of BOTH the After Christmas Sales and the January Sales
-- most tree lots give away Christmas trees free on Dec 24th late afternoon.
-- you have peace of mind in knowing you're not following the herd
-- all the nonprofits have stopped their constant begging
-- people have calmed-down and returned to a degree of normalcy
