USS North Carolina (SSN 777) Nuclear Submarine Launched

The Navy's newest attack submarine North Carolina will be commissioned Saturday, May 3, during a 10 a.m. EDT ceremony at Port of Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C.

Designated SSN 777, the fourth submarine of the Virginia-class will bear the name North Carolina to honor the Tar Heel State. The submarine will be the fourth ship of the U.S. Navy to bear the name North Carolina. The first was a 74-gun ship-of-the-line that served from 1820 to 1836. The second North Carolina was a Tennessee-class armored cruiser that was built at the Newport News shipyard and served from 1908 to 1921. The third North Carolina was the first of the Navy's modern battleships, serving from 1940 to 1947, earning 12 battle stars for service during World War II. The battleship now serves in Wilmington, N.C., as a memorial for all North Carolinians who served in World War II.

Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Linda Bowman, wife of retired Admiral Frank "Skip" Bowman, former director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion, will serve as sponsor of North Carolina. The ceremony will be highlighted by a time-honored Navy tradition when Bowman gives the first order to "man our ship and bring her to life!"

The Virginia-class is designed and built to fulfill all current warfighting requirements and provides the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation's undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. Equally adept at operating in the world's shallow littoral regions and deep waters, North Carolina and her sister ships will significantly contribute to the mission areas of anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface warfare; special operations forces; strike; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; battle group support; and mine warfare.

Captain Mark E. Davis, a native of upstate New York, will become the ship's first commanding officer and will lead a crew of approximately 134 officers and enlisted personnel. North Carolina will be homeported in Groton, Conn., as a member of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

The 7,800-ton North Carolina was built under a teaming arrangement between Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat. North Carolina is 337 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at depths greater than 800 feet and at speeds exceeding 25 knots submerged. North Carolina is also designed with a reactor plant which will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship-reducing lifecycle costs while increasing operational availability.

Jeremiah Wright - Out to Destroy Barack and Michelle Obama

Reverend Jeremiah Wright is actively doing everything within his power to assure that Barack Obama does not get the Democratic Party nomination and is not elected President of the United States.

In the photo: Jeremiah Wright during one of his violent,
intemperate, vituperative and harshly censorious attacks on his former friend, Barack Obama.

First the shoot-from-the-hip minister shouted out to his congregation, "God Damn America". Then he spoke before the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The comments he made there and his other recent remarks make it very clear that he is no friend of the Barack Obama campaign. If anything, he is Hillary's Holy Helper or McCain's Maniac McWeapon.

It's time for ministerial professionals in this country to remind Jeremiah Wright that he is a minister, not a drug-crazed ego-centric rock star. Wright's brand of Christianity is the loud-mouth in-your-face, arrogant, shouting, vein-popping insanity that some people seem to enjoy. They love their ministers to shout and scream at them. They like their ministers to tell them that while the congregation is innocent, the rest of the country is guilty, guilty, guilty.

Ministers cut from that ugly cloth speak to dysfunctional and angry people with very low self-esteem. They use public unrest as a wedge to build power and influence for themselves. They are cheap snake-oil salesmen. Jeremiah Wright panders to those kind of weak-minded people.

This isn't a "black church" thing, like Jeremiah Wright likes to claim in his defense. Many African-American churches are very animated. The choirs are massive, powerful and dynamic. The gospel music is moving. The sermons are encouraging, challenging and uplifting. That's the kind of experience many African-Americans enjoy on Sunday. Many African-American ministers preach hope and preach love and preach acceptance and preach encouragement.

Jeremiah Wright may have been that kind of preacher at one time, say twenty-years ago, but something happened to Wright. Something in his life went terribly wrong. He became an angry, bitter, mean-spirited man. He preys on weak people and he makes them the victims of his misguided, hateful oratory.

The preponderance of American voters, however, are not weak-minded dysfunctional masochists. They don't like being shouted at and they don't like people who insult the United States of America. They don't like angry misfits telling them how to think. I am one of those Americans.

Jeremiah Wright once hinted that if Barack Obama ever occupies the Oval Office, he will go knocking on President Obama's door. Great. Just what we need: a nut-case as adviser to the President.

Hillary Clinton seemed unable to knock-off Barack Obama. What the Clintons could not do, Obama's own paster is doing. Jeremiah Wright is single-handedly destroying Obama's presidential hope.

I'm reminded of the old saying: "with friends like that, who needs enemies?" Jeremiah Wright is an arrogant self-seeking power-hungry jackass. With credentials like that he may be a closet Republican. That would explain everything.

Barack Obama, the Democratic Party and the people of the United States deserve more respect than Jeremiah Wright is willing to give. Jeremiah Wright is a loser and he wants to drag everyone down with him into the pit of his own personal inner Hell.

Wright is an opportunist who has fallen in love with the hollow sounds of his own words. He loves the lights, the cameras, the TV news coverage and all the attention. He's nothing more than an old bag of hot gas who has an overly inflated opinion of himself. He's a cheap spotlight chaser.

Let's not let this self-centered hate-monger, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr., have an impact on our presidential election. Listen and watch for yourself what Barack Obama now says about Wright.

Christians Go Bizerk - It's 666 Day

Jesus Save Us!

Good Golly Miss Molly!

It's the End of the World!

Pastors, ministers, preachers and priests from Antioch to Zimbabwe are going to be falling on their knees. As of this moment the world population is 6,666, 242,819.

Egad! It's the dreaded 666!

It won't be long before the population of the planet is a series of 10 digits and they will all be sixes: 6,666,666,666.

It's time to get ready to meet the Lord!

All the right wing born-again Christian Republicans should give away everything they have, get into row boats and row as far out into the ocean as they possibly can so they can meet the Lord on the sea - far away from sinners.

With a little bit of luck they'll pick a stormy night.

Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco: Clowns, Buffoons and Fools

Have you read about the group of San Francisco lunatics who have formed the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco?

They want to get an initiative on the November ballot that would rename the Oceanside Wastewater Treatment Facility to the George W. Bush Sewer Plant.

In the photo: San Francisco's Oceanside Wastewater Treatment Facility. Click on the image to enlarge in a separate window.

While there is something mildly funny about naming a sewer plant after George W. Bush, we need to draw the line at belittling the office of President of the United States. The current holder of the office may be universally disliked, but let's think twice before insulting the highest office in our nation.

The presidency as an institution must be above our ridicule. We must make a clear distinction between the man and the office.

The Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco

An organization is only as respectable and honorable as its members. With that in mind, take a look at the group's Board of Directors:

Peaches Christ
Chicken John

Tangie Rumors

Sister Selma Soul
Mary Kaye Hole

Sister Porn Again

Wayne Pickering

Paul Festa
Moses Koret

Most members of the Board of Directors are not serious enough or honest enough to even list their correct legal names. They list their professional clown names instead.

These clowns want the voters of San Francisco to join them in a grade-school antic. In the process of having their little bathroom humor laugh they want the people of San Francisco to denigrate, demean and degrade the highest office in the land.

Twenty-First Century San Franciscans

During the past ten years people of means, intelligence, education and culture have been moving into San Francisco. They have been buying beautiful Victorian, Edwardian and Italianate homes and they have been beautifully and lovingly restoring them. These same people have been occupying the offices of some of the world's most prestigious scientific and medical research centers, corporate boardrooms, law offices and other professions.

They contribute generously to our world-class symphony orchestra, to our opera and other performing arts centers. These new San Franciscans are returning The City to the once grand, sophisticated, cultured and refined international City it once was.

The Peaches Christs and Chicken Johns of San Francisco are our rapidly shrinking collection of buffoons and misfits. They are
mid-twentieth-century leftovers. Its time for them to fade away and leave the stage. The show is over. They are just not funny anymore.

Let's not let these immature children put any kind of permanent stamp on San Francisco infrastructure that is sure to be an embarrassment to future San Franciscans.

Don't sign their petition. If they get their initiative on the ballot - vote no. Keep San Francisco in the hands of adults.

Remember: This is not about George Bush. It is about the collective IQ of San Franciscans.

B-24 Aircrew from WWII Found & Brought Home

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of 11 U.S. servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

In the photo: a B-24 Liberator, a heavy bomber built during World War II by Consolidated Aircraft.

They are Capt. Robert L. Coleman, of Wilmington, Del.; 1st Lt. George E. Wallinder, of San Antonio, Texas; 2nd Lt. Kenneth L. Cassidy, of Worcester, Mass.; 2nd Lt. Irving Schechner, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 2nd Lt. Ronald F. Ward, of Cambridge, Mass.; Tech. Sgt. William L. Fraser, of Maplewood, Mo.; Tech. Sgt. Paul Miecias, of Piscataway, N.J.; Tech. Sgt. Robert C. Morgan, of Flint, Mich.; Staff Sgt. Albert J. Caruso, of Kearny, N.J.; Staff Sgt. Robert E. Frank, of Plainfield, N.J.; and Pvt. Joseph Thompson, of Compton, Calif; all U.S. Army Air Forces. The dates and locations of the funerals are being set by their families.

Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men in their hometowns to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army.

On Dec. 3, 1943, these men crewed a B-24D Liberator that departed Dobodura, New Guinea, on an armed-reconnaissance mission over New Hanover Island in the Bismarck Sea. The crew reported dropping their bombs on target, but in spite of several radio contacts with their base, they never returned to Dobodura. Subsequent searches failed to locate the aircraft.

In 2000, three Papua New Guineans were hunting in the forest when they came across aircraft wreckage near Iwaia village. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) was notified and began planning an investigation. In 2002, a JPAC team traveled to Deboin Village to interview two individuals who said they knew where the crash site was. However, the witnesses could not relocate the site.

In 2004, the site was found about four miles from Iwaia village in Papua New Guinea where a JPAC team found an aircraft data plate that correlated to the 1943 crash.
Between 2004 and 2007, JPAC teams conducted two excavations of the site and recovered human remains and non-biological material including some crew-related artifacts such as identification tags.

Among dental records, other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of the remains.

A photo of the Aircrew photo is available from the DPMO. Call . For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo

Stop the Homophobic California Amendment Drive!

An open letter from EQCA director Jeff Kors:

T
his is our last chance to keep the ballot measure from qualifying.

We have momentum. The governor has said he will fight with us to defeat this measure. But we still need you.

Our opponents recently poured another quarter of a million dollars into their paid signature gathering effort for a final push this weekend. We must counter their efforts.

We have one more week — and we need you. Will you join our fight against this amendment?

We have just days left to deny our opponents the final 100,000 signatures they say they need to qualify the amendment for the November ballot.

This is our last chance.

Here’s how you can help defeat this outrageous assault on our rights:

  • Sign up to volunteer. Equality for All had 800 people on the streets last weekend talking to tens of thousands of Californians and asking them to not sign the petitions. If you were a volunteer — thank you! We need 1,000 volunteers this week in order to keep this amendment off the ballot.
  • Make a donation. Every dollar you donate will help fight this initiative and counter the $250,000 the opposition just raised.
  • Send an email to 10 friends. Tell them what is going on. Ask them to volunteer and donate.

Proponents of this amendment will do anything to get this measure on the ballot. We have heard of signature forging, volunteers telling voters this discriminatory petition supports marriage equality, and other illegal tactics.

We need you to join us today.

In solidarity,

Geoff Kors
Executive Director
Equality California Issues PAC

P.S. While Californians are supportive of equality for all people, we cannot assume voters would defeat a constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples. To have a fighting chance, we will need millions of dollars for a statewide campaign. With just a small amount of your time now, we may be able to avoid the risk of erasing years of progress – and save millions of dollars.

IRS Tax Help for Those Who Can't Pay in Full

The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers who owe but can’t pay in full that several options are available to help them meet their tax obligations and save money by the April 15 filing deadline.

Taxpayers should file their return on time, pay as much as they can with their return and use IRS.gov if they need to request a payment agreement.

Interest and penalties add up for people who don’t file and pay on time. But taxpayers can limit these charges by filing on time and paying sooner.

Though interest, currently at the rate of 6 percent per year and late payment penalties, normally 0.5 percent (1/2 of 1 percent) per month, apply to any tax paid after the April 15 deadline, taxpayers can limit these charges by paying sooner. In addition, by filing on time, a taxpayer avoids the much larger 5-percent-per-month late-filing penalty. For example, a taxpayer who files on May 1, owing $1,000 in tax, would be charged interest plus a $50 penalty.

Various e-pay options offer taxpayers the easiest and fastest way to make a full or partial payment with their return. These options enable taxpayers to make payments either online or by phone using electronic funds withdrawal or a credit card. Alternatively, taxpayers can send the IRS a check made out to “United States Treasury.”

Taxpayers who need more time to pay can find out in just a few minutes whether they qualify for a payment agreement with the IRS. Just click on the Online Payment Agreement link and follow the prompts. By entering some basic information about their tax situation, eligible taxpayers can set up in a matter of minutes either a short-term payment extension or a monthly payment plan.

A short-term extension gives a taxpayer up to 120 days to pay. No fee is charged, but the late-payment penalty plus interest will apply.

A monthly payment plan or installment agreement gives a taxpayer more time to pay. Though interest still applies, the late-payment penalty is cut in half for any month an installment agreement is in effect. This reduced rate of 0.25 percent (1/4 of 1 percent) per month is only available if the tax return was filed on time.

A user fee will also be charged if the installment agreement is approved. The fee, normally $105, is reduced to $52, if taxpayers agree to make their monthly payments electronically through electronic funds withdrawal. The fee is $43 for eligible low-and-moderate-income taxpayers.

Alternatively, taxpayers can apply for a payment agreement by filling out Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request. This form can be filed along with either an electronically filed return or a paper return. If filing on paper, be sure to attach it to the front of the return.

Some taxpayers can wait until after April 15 to file and pay. As a general rule, those eligible get the extra time penalty-free and interest-free without having to ask for it. Eligible taxpayers include:

• Members of the military serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or other combat-zone localities. Normally, the filing and payment deadline is postponed until 180 days after the service member leaves the combat zone.

• Disaster-area taxpayers in four states affected by recent floods, storms and tornadoes. The filing and payment deadline is postponed until May 6 in parts of Illinois, May 19 in parts of Georgia and Missouri and May 27 in parts of Arkansas.

SF/SPCA Cinderella Fund Success Story

Success Stories from The SF/SPCA

Three Little Maids
These three cats taken in by The SF/SPCA during March had injuries that required surgery. Thanks to the Society's Cinderella Fund, all three received the treatment they needed and two have since been adopted into loving homes.

Diana
An eight-month old dilute tortie, Diana came to The SF/SPCA from the Elko, Nevada shelter. She had a huge gash at the base of her tail, and the tail had literally "died." The shelter could not afford to amputate it, and were preparing to euthanize her. Within days of arriving at The SF/SPCA this sweet little girl had the surgery she needed and was adopted soon afterward.

Turtle
Turtle is a one-year old grey tabby who, as luck would have it, was trapped in an SF/SPCA feral cat cage while seeking food. Volunteers who discovered her saw that one of her back legs was badly broken, with the bone sticking out through the skin and fur. She was brought to The SF/SPCA where veterinarians determined that she had a compound fracture of her left hind leg. Unfortunately, the leg could not be saved and had to be amputated, but Turtle is recovering very well and is now available for adoption.

Small Fry
This dainty little one-year old Siamese was found in a cage that was used by The SF/SPCA Feral Cat Assistance Program to trap feral cats. It was clear that she was a stray or had been abandoned because she was wearing an old flea collar which had somehow become dislodged. It was now caught at an angle, half around her neck, the other half across her shoulder and under one of her front legs, and shockingly, as Small Fry had grown bigger the plastic collar had become embedded in her flesh! Veterinarians at The SF/SPCA surgically removed the band and stitched up the wound, and after some recovery time, this little trooper was adopted.

San Francisco Japantown Cherry Blossom Festival 2008

San Franciscans have long celebrated the ancient rite of Spring's bursting-forth with an enthusiasm for the annual Japantown Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival, which began in 1967, remains true to ancient Japanese traditions, but also embraces the variety of cultures, food, music and dance we experience in this mini global village we call San Francisco.

This year, with picture-perfect weather, as many as 250,000 people are expected to visit Japantown for the festival.

The Street Fair will include a food bazaar, featuring traditional Japanese cuisine and cooking demonstrations, a Japanese traditional arts & crafts fair and a children's village.

Entertainment stages will feature performances by Japanese classical and folk dancers, martial artists, Taiko drummers and performers of a variety of music types from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

You will also find a full vendor's market of hand-crafted works of art in a variety of home-made products. The vendors, including the food bazaar, will operate from 11 AM to 5 PM every day of the festival.

Traditional Japanese tea ceremonies will be performed on Sunday, April 13th and Sunday, April 20th at 11 AM, 1 PM, 2 PM, 3 PM and 4 PM. Each ceremony will be conducted in the Osaka Room of the Hotel Kabuki and will last about 30-minutes.

The Festival covers two weekends:
- Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13
- Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20

The annual Cherry Blossom Festival Parade will be held on Sunday, April 20. The parade begins at 1 PM and is expected to finish at 3 PM.

SFPD Foot Patrol Report Released – Hearing on Wednesday

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi's District Five Report, which is published via email monthly, included the following reminder I would like to pass along:

In an effort to reduce crime in San Francisco neighborhoods, the Board of Supervisors mandated last year that eight of the City's ten police districts have officers walking a beat, beginning January 2007. A report on the evaluation of that policy will be presented in the Board Chambers next week:

What: Joint Hearing of Police Commission and Public Safety Committee
When: April 16, 2008, 6pm
Where: Board of Supervisors Chambers, Room 250 City Hall

An independent consulting company, Public Safety Strategies Group, performed the analysis of the foot-patrol program. Results and recommendations in the report titled "Foot Patrol Program Evaluation Report" were released on Tuesday, and can be downloaded at

Speak Up for Internet Neutrality

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is holding a hearing on Internet freedom and Net neutrality in Palo Alto on April 17, and there is room for more than 700 people.

Your comments in person will send a strong message to Washington that Americans will not tolerate private corporate Internet gatekeepers. Agency officials at the FCC — and political leaders in Congress — must take immediate action to safeguard free speech and innovation online.

Verizon has been caught blocking text messages about reproductive rights; Comcast has been caught blocking peer-to-peer communications; and AT&T wants to inspect and filter what travels through its Internet network. The government must put in place baseline protections that will leave the Internet open to the millions of people who use it.

All testimony given at the event will be added to the public record, and your testimony will help build the case for free speech online.

WHAT: Public FCC Hearing on the Future of the Internet
WHEN: Thursday, April 17
TIME: Noon to 7 p.m. — with public comment at 4:30 p.m.
WHERE: Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford University
471 Lagunita Drive, Palo Alto

Be sure to download the ACLU Net Neutrality myths and facts and bring them with you.

The FCC has allotted at least two hours for public testimony, and the ACLU of Northern California is working with their allies and partners on the ground to be sure everyone who wants to testify has a turn at the microphone.

Here’s the agenda:

Noon — Welcome/Opening Remarks from FCC Commissioners
12:45 p.m. — Panel 1: Network Management and Consumer Expectations
3 p.m. — Panel 2: Consumer Access to Emerging Internet Technologies and Applications
4:30 p.m. — Public Comment (That’s you!)
6:30 p.m. — Closing Remarks
7 p.m. — Adjournment

Sign the Petition: No Torch in Tibet!

Right now, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Members are meeting in Beijing. They have the power to stop China from running the Olympic Torch through Tibet.

to see a video (WARNING: very graphic content) with photos of the IOC Executive Members who will have blood on their hands if the Olympic torch is allowed to go through Tibet.

Allowing the Chinese authorities to take the Olympic torch to Tibet while Tibetans are living under martial law and being shot in the streets for peaceful protest is unconscionable. This is not about sport. This is about human lives and a nation's struggle to survive.

Despite many attempts to communicate this to IOC leaders, they refuse to acknowledge their responsibility in this matter. Help Students for a Free Tibet show them that they ARE responsible and the international community will hold each member personally accountable for the actions of the Chinese authorities inside Tibet.

Newsom Orders Statue of Liberty Play for Olympic Torch

You've just got to admire San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. He did something today that neither the mayors of London, England or Paris, France could do.

The Olympic Torch was run through part of San Francisco and there were no major incidents and no major arrests despite thousands of angry pro-Tibet and pro-China activists, both sporting huge flags and lots and lots of anger.

A San Francisco police officer said there were could have been upwards of 25,000 people lining the route for the run.

Mayor Newsom, however, did something the San Francisco 49ers only wish they could do. He called for a Statue of Liberty play and executed it flawlessly.
It's a trick play where the quarterback fakes a pass, then just stands there with the ball in his raised hand (like the Statue of Liberty) and the halfback, running a crossing route, takes the ball out of his hand and runs with it.

Here's how Coach Newsom called the play: The torch suddenly disappeared from the announced route. Police vans, cruisers and motorcycles, with lights and sirens blaring seemed to take the torch into one of the Port of San Francisco's long wharf buildings. It appeared the torch might be transferred to waiting SFPD patrol boats and ferried around to another spot along the route.
Protesters and supporters alike scrambled to get into place where they thought the torch might appear. It was all a fake. The torch was nowhere around. The crowd and the protesters were looking for the torch in one direction, while it was being run in the other for a touchdown.

The real torch was secretly being moved up to Van Ness Avenue where hundreds of SFPD police officers in cruisers, vans, motorcycles and bicycles waited. The San Francisco Sheriff's Office was there in force as well. To the surprise of folks walking along Van Ness Avenue, the Olympic Torch was run up the street and through the Marina neighborhood (almost completely deserted during weekdays) and ended up on an elevated stretch of Doyle Drive.
It was a game-winning touchdown for the SFPD Team and Coach Newsom.

A lot of people are unhappy, of course, but the Mayor kept the peace and kept the streets of San Francisco safe - and that's what we hired Gavin Newsom to do - keep our City safe.
The Mayor and his team thought on their feet and made important decisions as they were needed. They made the right choices under a lot of pressure and with no time to contemplate their decisions. Their performance was exemplary.

It was a great solution. The runners were able to fulfill their dreams of carrying the Olympic Torch through San Francisco. The Chinese government officials were able to see a peaceful run through an American city. The protesters were able to exercise their freedom of speech. The peace was kept and no major violence erupted. The ambulances and medical responders who were on-call were not needed. Add all that up and the result is a complete success.

The crowning touch, for an old San Franciscan like me, would have been to see former Mayor Willie Brown suited up and running the last lap carrying the Olympic Torch across the finish line. I'm glad the embedded media pool was able to get photos and videos of Da Mayor and the Torch.

Thank you, Mayor Newsom and thank you Chief Fong and Sheriff Hennessey and thanks also to the remarkable men and women who work for the City and County of San Francisco. You have proved to the world, once again, that San Francisco is the City that knows how!

Personally, I support the Free Tibet movement and I am absolutely opposed to the Beijing Red Chinese government. I voiced my opinion through this blog and through my attendance at the Free Tibet rally on Tuesday evening where Archbishop Desmond Tutu also spoke out against the Chinese government.

That's my opinion - yours may be different - but I'm very pleased with the Mayor's performance and I'm very grateful to the extraordinary professionalism of the SFPD, the SFSO and all the agencies that provided assistance and support to the City.

Job well done.

Job very well done!

Of course, the question arises: Why did we invite the Olympic Torch to San Francisco if we had to deceive the public, keep the route secret to protect the flame and spend a ton of taxpayer money for elaborate security? True, there were hundreds of thousands of dollars in private donations, but because of the worldwide protests surrounding the Olympic Torch, this event ended up costing San Francisco taxpayers a hell of a lot of money. This is the next question to which we need an answer: Just whose idea was this and how was the decision made? Could we have anticipated the political unrest and should we have reconsidered the decision to bring the Olympic Torch to San Francisco?

The point has often been made that the Olympics should not be politicized. That argument ignores the history of the modern Olympics which is absolutely bursting at the seems with political activity. The 1956 Games were boycotted by several European nations because of the violent repression of the Hungarian uprising by the Soviet union. Still other nations boycotted the games because of the Suez Canal crisis.

Communist Red China (Beijing) completely dropped out of the Olympic Games from 1976 to 1984 because they refused to be a part of the Olympics if the Republic of China (Taiwan) was permitted to participate in the Games.

In 1980, during the depth of the Cold War, sixty-five nations refused to participate in the Moscow Olympic Games because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In 1984 the Soviet Union and 14 of its eastern Bloc slave-states refused to participate in the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

It's ironic that today the Beijing government would feign to be so offended. Beijing's geriatric Communist Party leadership is so completely full of crap. By the way ... most of those huge bright red Communist Chinese flags we saw being waved around down on the Embarcadero were provided by the Chinese Consulate. The Chinese Communist Party has been doing as much as they can to orchestrate the way the media saw the event. Fortunately for those of us who believe in free speech, Mayor Newsom's decision to call a Statue of Liberty play thwarted the Chinese government's attempts to influence our media. Their red-flag waving was to no avail.

Still, in the final analysis, the decision to run the Olympic Torch in San Francisco should be fully investigated by our City's legislative body, the Board of Supervisors. I hope our Board of Supervisors President, Aaron Peskin, who is a very capable man at this sort of thing, will call for a full investigation. I would very much like to see the Board of Supervisors get to the bottom of all this on behalf of the voters and taxpayers of San Francisco.

Somebody has just cost the taxpayers of San Francisco a hell of a lot of money and I, as one citizen of San Francisco, would like to know who made the decision and what process was involved. We need a direct-democracy review!

Golden Gate Bridge Authorities Admit Failure

On this morning's television coverage of the Golden Gate Bridge sign-hanging (see the video here), a spokesperson for the Golden Gate Highway and Transportation District, which operates the Golden Gate Bridge, said their security focus is on response time, not prevention.

I believe the spokesperson's name is Marie Curry. She told the television news reporter that she could not understand why so many people are seeing this as a security breach. She said it was not a security failure at all because their focus is on response time, not prevention. That's an obvious and blatant cop-out.

The Golden Gate Bridge security team failed completely and failed miserably. The bridge authorities and the California Highway Patrol were powerless and impotent to prevent several young members of Students for a Free Tibet from climbing the bridge and unfurling huge banners that read FREE TIBET.

If the GGB District officials are not concerned, equipped or capable of preventing security breaches, and if it is true that their focus is limited to a quick response time - then - the GGB District Board of Directors need to clean house and fire the people who think their focus should be limited to a quick response time.
A quick response time should be an automatic no-brainer. After all, the police cruisers are stationed at both ends of the bridge. How difficult is it to jump in a car and race half-way across the bridge?

That's the easy part.
The difficult part is having intelligent security in place that will prevent security breaches in the first place. That's what the toll-payers and the taxpayers are paying for. We are paying a lot of money to have the Golden Gate Bridge secured. We want the GGB Board and the CHP to PREVENT something from happening in the first place.

Students for a Free Tibet clearly proved to us that we are paying for service we are not getting.

Golden Gate Bridge is a national treasure. We cannot afford to entrust a national treasure to idiots who think their best strategy to protect the bridge is to be fast to respond after the fact. This isn't a Smokey and the Bandits game.

Thinking about security after the fact is too late. Get it?

If you would like to let the GGB Board of Directors know what you think about their security, here's where you can send them an email:
