San Francisco Tops Hawaii in Tourist Visitors

Pacific Business News
in Honolulu published an article comparing tourism in the State of Hawaii to tourism in the City of San Francisco. In 2007 more people visited San Francisco than visited the entire State of Hawaii.

The San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau reports that 16.1 million tourists came to San Francisco in 2007. The number of visitors to the entire State of Hawaii in 2007 was only 7,368,048.

San Francisco tourists spent a record $8.2 billion in 2007.

Tourism pays the wages of more than 72,000 people in San Francisco, with an annual payroll of $1.95 billion. The City's hotel occupancy was 79 percent in 2007 and in 2006 it was 76.4 percent.

Garden Court at the Palace Hotel - San Francisco's Most Elegant Brunch

Picture this:

It is San Francisco in 1875. The Civil War had come to a bloody end twelve years before. The City in those days was centered around the docks along the Embarcadero (the shore in those days was back several blocks. The modern-day Embarcadero sits on land reclaimed from the bay) and grew outward from that point.

Much of the town was little more than a collection of ramshackle buildings. A good number of the saloons and warehouses along the shore of the bay were really old sailing ships that had been hauled up from the water and remodeled.

It was the Wild West. Towns were dusty and dirty. Paint was seldom used other than simple whitewash.

There were some exceptions, of course. Chinatown was nothing short of glorious. It was a wonderful place to be as far as family and nurturing and childhood are concerned, but it was also cramped and squalid and impoverished. The families in Chinatown didn't have much in the material sense, but they had a warmth of tradition and family that are still unequaled in most of today's San Francisco households. Chinatown was easily the prettiest place in the San Francisco of 1875. It was ablaze with red and gold. To outsiders it seemed that lion dances were weekly events and strings of firecrackers were forever being ignited. The scent of rich sandalwood incense perpetually drifted through the air. It still does.

The rest of San Francisco was pretty drab. Even the mansions on Rincon Hill (the elite address during the 1850's to 1870's, before Nob Hill came into fashion) were not as impressive as the Palace Hotel when it opened its doors in 1875.

It was such a stunning experience to walk into the Palace Hotel for the first time. One stepped out of a dusty John Wayne movie set into an absolutely spectacular European palace. It was grand and massive. Granite and polished marble, cut-glass chandeliers imported from Austria, deep burgundy red carpets, French furniture ... and on and on. It was opulent and magical. For many Californians it was the experience of a lifetime.

Guests arrived through the Garden Court entrance where carriages brought their passengers to the grand entrance through a U-shaped drive. The drive was known as the Garden Court. Once inside, admirers were awed by the hotel's four hydraulic elevators known as "rising rooms." Now guests could reach the hotel's top floors without effort. Each room was equipped with an electronic call button so that every guest's whim was met quickly and fulfilled completely.

Today the Garden Court is no longer the carriage entrance. The space is now enclosed in a magnificent stained-glass dome. It covers one of the world's most elegant restaurants - The Garden Court. With its incredible architecture and Austrian crystal chandeliers, The Garden Court became the site for some of the nation's most prestigious events.

Throughout its history, the Palace Hotel has witnessed the arrival of numerous prestigious guests. Presidents U. S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, and Rutherford B. Hayes stayed there, as did President Warren G. Harding, who died there. King David Kalakaua of Hawaii also died there. Business leaders John D. Rockefeller and J. P. Morgan were guests, as were renowned British playwright Oscar Wilde, actress Sarah Bernhardt (who arrived with her pet baby tiger), and opera legend Enrico Caruso.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson hosted two luncheons in support of the Versailles Treaty which ended World War I. In 1945, the official banquet honoring the opening session of the United Nations was held in The Garden Court.

If you are a San Franciscan and have not yet been to the Garden Court, then shame on you! If you do not live in San Francisco, then make your plans now to enjoy this magnificent restaurant on your very next visit to this beautiful City by the Bay.

Stop the Initiative: Defend Same-Sex Marriage in California

On May 15, the California Supreme Court ruled that the right to marry extends to all couples. The landmark decision gives same-gender couples the freedom to marry in California. Couples will have the opportunity to legally marry beginning as soon as June 16.

In 2005, the California Legislature made history as the first in the nation to pass a bill that would have given same-gender couples the freedom to marry. The Legislature passed an identical bill again in 2007, but Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed both measures.

Following the Supreme Court decision on May 15, Governor Schwarzenegger said firmly that he will uphold and enforce the Court's decision and oppose the proposed ballot initiative that would take away the right of same-gender couples to marry by writing discrimination into the California Constitution.

California Law

Beginning as early as June 17, same-gender couples will have the opportunity to marry. In California, clergy members, active and retired judges and court commissioners and the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners of Civil Marriages are authorized to perform legal marriages.

Commissioners perform marriage ceremonies by appointment at designated county offices. There is a fee, which is generally less than $50. Call ahead or visit the county website for more information.

California Marriage Case

EQCA was a plaintiff in the historic California marriage case decided by the California Supreme Court on May 15, 2008. The court ruled that a ban on marriage for same-gender couples is unconstitutional. More info>>

Why Should Taxpayers Bail Out House Flippers?

We hear a lot of whining these days from reckless home borrowers and their banks.

But did you know that renters are 32 percent of American households? And that homes in foreclosure are less than 2 percent?

Are you also aware that the clear majority of foreclosures are against people who lied on their loan applications and stated an income much higher than they really had?

So why is Congress rushing to bailout high-flying borrowers and their lenders with our tax dollars?

Unfortunately, renters aren't as good at politics as the small minority of homeowners (and their bankers) who are in trouble. They don't have lobbyists in Washington, DC.

Renters don't get a federal tax deduction for rent and they don't get sweetheart government loans.

When renters face difficulties and can't pay their rent, there is no remedy or easy solution waiting for them. Unlike property buyers, renters have no government subsidy or help waiting in the wings.

Why is America more fair to home owners (even liars, speculators and house flippers) than they are to working Americans who can only afford to rent. Those renters could have lied like the sub-prime borrowers, but they chose to lead honest lives instead. Their reward: nothing but a slap in the face from the Bush Administration.

Watch the following video and after, sign the petition to Congress.

AngryRenter.com is promoting a petition to Congress:

WHEREAS: Most Americans rent or own their home outright, and the vast majority of homes (98%) are not in foreclosure.

WHEREAS: Both banks and borrowers should be responsible for their actions, and the government should not reward reckless behavior.

WHEREAS: It is wrong to force all taxpayers-- including renters who are already subsidizing home owners through the tax code-- to pay for additional bailouts for big banks and home flippers.

BE IT RESOLVED: That Congress should not pass any bailout programs that reward risky borrowing and lending. Let the free market sort it out!

The tax laws provide some special benefits for active members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those serving in combat zones.

For federal tax purposes, the U.S. Armed Forces includes officers and enlisted personnel in all regular and reserve units controlled by the Secretaries of Defense, the Army, Navy and Air Force. The Coast Guard is also included, but not the U.S. Merchant Marine or the American Red Cross. However, these and other support personnel may qualify for certain tax deadline extensions because of their service in a combat zone.

Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic Grant Money Now Available for 2009

National Taxpayer Advocate Nina E. Olson announced today that the 2009 Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) grant application process is now open.

The LITC grant program is a federal program administered by the Taxpayer Advocate Service. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization within the IRS whose employees assist taxpayers who are experiencing economic harm, who are seeking help in resolving tax problems that have not been resolved through normal channels or who believe that an IRS system or procedure is not working as it should.

Under the LITC grant program, the IRS awards matching grants of up to $100,000 per year to develop, expand or maintain low income taxpayer clinics. The program is in its tenth year and continues to expand. To date in 2008, the LITC Program Office has awarded LITC grants to 154 organizations in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.

LITCs are independent organizations that provide low income taxpayers with representation in federal tax controversies with the IRS for free or for a nominal charge. The clinics also provide taxpayer education and outreach for taxpayers who speak English as a second language. Publication 4134, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic List, provides information on clinics. It is available at www.irs.gov or local IRS offices.

Examples of qualifying organizations include:

  • Clinical programs at accredited law, business or accounting schools, whose students represent low income taxpayers in tax disputes with the IRS, and
  • Organizations exempt from tax under Code Section 501(a) that represent low income taxpayers in tax disputes with the IRS or refer those taxpayers to qualified representatives.

The application period for this grant will run from May 27, 2008, through July 7, 2008. The grant will cover the 2009 grant cycle, from Jan. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2009. Applications must be postmarked or filed electronically by July 7, 2008.

Copies of the 2009 Grant Application Package and Guidelines, IRS Publication 3319 (Rev. 5-2008), are available at www.irs.gov/advocate. Applicants may also order application packages from the IRS Distribution Center by calling 1-.

Applicants can also file electronically at www.grants.gov. Those applying electronically should use the Funding Number: TREAS-GRANTS-052009-001.

Linda Richardson - SF Democratic Party Central Committee

This time of year we are all pestered by campaign calls, junk mail and political email spam. Most of it comes from the presidential campaigns and a fair amount from local candidates. The exception is usually folks who are running for local county central committees. These candidates are seldom heard from - seldom that is - until now.

In the photo: Linda Richardson, candidate for San Francisco Democratic Party County Central Committee

Linda Richardson is running a real and active campaign for San Francisco Democratic Party County Central Committee. In a press release sent to Sam Spade's San Francisco, Richardson wrote:

“I have worked for years and at every level to improve the lives of the residents of Bayview-Hunters Point, enhance the quality of life for San Franciscans, and to get Democrats elected,” Ms. Richardson wrote in her email. “It is crucial that this part of San Francisco receive energized, effective representation in the political arena, and for a dependable voice to be elected to the DCCC. I want to elevate the discussions within the Democratic Party on Affordable Healthcare, Education, the Environment, Economy, Green Energy and Human Rights.”

A former President of the Civil Service Commission and former member of the San Francisco Planning Commission, Richardson led negotiations that resulted in the historic 1998 agreement to close the Hunters Point power plant. She is currently a member of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission.

Endorsements for Linda Richardson include the Bay Area Reporter, Asian Week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Mayor Gavin Newsom, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, Supervisor Bevan Dufty, Treasurer Jose Cisneros, Dr. Anita Grier, the SF Labor Council, SF Young Democrats, Raoul Wallenberg Jewish Democratic Club, Asian Pacific Islander Democratic Club, SF Women's Political Committee, African American Democratic Club, Irish American Democratic Club, Chinese American Democratic Club, Black Women for Political Action, National Women's Political Caucus (SF), City Democratic Club, and FDR Democratic Club.

Linda Richardson is putting a lot of time and effort into her campaign. She's already doing the kind of work we all hope our county central committee members should do. Linda Richardson deserves our votes.

If you live in the City and County of San Francisco and you are a registered Democrat, you will have an opportunity to vote for and elect Linda Richardson to the San Francisco Democratic Party County Central Committee. A vote for Linda Richardson is a vote to improve, strengthen and develop the Bayview - Hunters Point communities.

San Francisco needs Linda Richardson and so does the Democratic Party.

Lost Boat Memorial Aboard USS Pampanito - San Francisco

I received an email from Roberta Guise who would like me to remind the community that a long-standing U.S. Naval tradition, the Lost Boat Memorial, will take place aboard the USS Pampanito, a WWII submarine, which is permanently docked at Pier 45 near Fisherman's Wharf.

In the photo: USS Pampanito returns home through the Golden Gate. Click to enlarge in a separate window.

USS Pampanito (SS-383) is a World War II Balao class Fleet submarine museum and memorial that is open for visitors daily at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Pampanito made six patrols in the Pacific during World War II during which she sank six Japanese ships and damaged four others.

The ceremony will take place at 5 PM on Memorial Day Monday and is free of all charge to everyone who wants to attend and honor the lost sailors of the United States Navy Submarine Service. A performance of echo taps will be performed in honor of the 52 submarine boats lost along with the lives of 3,5000 brave American submariners.

Following is a list of the boats and crews that will be honored at the ceremony. This list is provided courtesy of San Francisco Maritime National Park Association. Thank you.

UNITED STATES SUBMARINE LOSSES

Submarine Dolphins

The decisive role played by the Silent Service during WW II is often overlooked, or the significance of their contribution is not fully understood. The Submarine Service represented only 1.6% of all Navy personnel during the war but they accounted for over 55% of all Japanese ships sunk, including one-third of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Submariners paid a high price for this accomplishment, however, with the highest percentage causality rate of any branch of the service, almost 23%. Fifty-two U.S. submarines were lost during WW II with over 3,500 men. Forty additional men were lost either from gunfire or tragic mishap. It should always be remembered that these men were all volunteers.

Below is a list of each of the fifty-two submarines lost during WW II. Click on a boat name to read the names of the United States Navy submariners lost with their boat.

Memorial Day San Francisco 2008 at the Presidio

Note: for 2009 Memorial Day information go to: Memorial Day in San Francisco 2009 - details, links, directions
.

Here is the 2008 story:

Take a look at the photo. That's the field at Gettysburg. The structure you see in the distance is the place where President Abraham Lincoln stood and delivered the Gettysburg Address.

Click on the photo to enlarge it in a new window

Since that day in 1863, there have been no barbecues, no parties, no bands and no beer guzzling at Gettysburg. That field, along with the nation's national cemeteries, are the places where Memorial Day is really and truly honored and kept.

The parties, the noise and the booze are fine - IF - you also set aside one day to truly honor Memorial Day in some real and meaningful way. Memorial Day is Monday. Have your parties on Saturday and Sunday, but on Monday, please ... show respect.

"If other eyes grow dull,
other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain to us"

What is an appropriate way to remember the sons, the daughters, the husbands, wives, parents, brothers, sisters and friends who have died in this war? If you have lost someone, I'm willing to bet that you're not in a mood to have a party with all your friends and get in as many laughs as you can. If your neighbors remembered the death of your family member with a drunken party or a barbecue complete with dancing and music, you would be offended.

So, why is it that so many Americans do things on Memorial Day that are so deeply insulting and painful and hurtful to those of us who have lost loved ones to the insanity of war? Why? How can people be so mean and self-absorbed to take such a precious remembrance and throw it into the mud and dance all over it?

"Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect,
no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic"

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. It was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

The best way to develop a sensitive, loving and appropriate feel for Memorial Day and what it means to so many Americans (and our numbers are unfortunately growing as Iraq deaths continue to climb) is to take just a few minutes out of your life to slowly, carefully and respectfully read every word written in General Order No. 11. This is the document that started Memorial Day. The words ring out just as clear and true today as they were when they were penned.
Here are those words:

HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC

General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868

1. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.

If other eyes grow dull, other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain to us.

Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.

2. It is the purpose of the Commander-in-Chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to lend its friendly aid in bringing to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.

3. Department commanders will use efforts to make this order effective.
By order of

JOHN A. LOGAN,

Commander-in-Chief

N.P. CHIPMAN,
Adjutant General

WM. T. COLLINS, A.A.G.
