We've all seen news images of President Obama's rolling bomb shelter that is disguised as a Cadillac limousine. Details on the Obama limo (called Cadillac One) are difficult to get, but here are some of the details.
The U. S. Secret Service prefers to play their cards close to the vest and they are saying as little as possible about the Presidential Limousine, officially known as the Presidential State Car. However I found an interesting graphic originally published in the British edition of the Christian Science Monitor.
It describes some high-tech (but unconfirmed) features that come with the limousine. If you click on the graphic you should be able to enlarge it in a separate window or tab. Apparently President Obama's new limousine makes James Bond's mythical spy car look like a horse and buggy.
The story accompanying the graphic puts it this way: "It’s like a tank. Secret Service agents are calling it “The Beast.” Reportedly the armor surrounding the car is at least five inches thick making it, as some news outlets have put it, “rocket-resistant.” Others have joked it could withstand a collision with an asteroid."
The San Francisco Chronicle puts it in perspective noting, “a half-inch of transparent armor is enough to stop a .44 Magnum round at point-blank range; at a thickness of 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches, the same material can withstand higher-velocity bullets fired from military assault rifles.”
The windows, of course, are bulletproof. The tires reportedly can’t get a flat or if they do, it makes no difference, the car keeps rolling. And the interior is like a cocoon - a really safe cocoon reportedly impervious to chemical attacks.
Car and Driver commented, "We’re told an interior using high-quality leather like that seen in the CTS goes along for the ride and that Cadillac’s newfound love of LED lighting extends to spotlights shining on the fender-mounted flag standards. There are several Presidential seals strategically placed inside and out."
