The Mormon Church being investigated for Election Law Violations. Felony charges pending?

Mormons in California are a lot like sheep. They do whatever their geriatric leaders in Salt Lake City tell them to do - even when it comes to breaking laws and committing felonies.

During and shortly after California Prop 8, officials of the Mormon Church denied they were the force behind the hate bill that sought to strip gay and lesbian California of their human rights. The Mormon Church in Utah lied to its members in California, lied to the people of California and with deliberate intent, violated California law and very possibly federal election laws. Somebody in Salt Lake City is going to jail.

Mormon church officials, facing an ongoing investigation by the state Fair Political Practices Commission, Friday reported nearly $190,000 in previously unlisted assistance to the successful campaign for Prop. 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California. Some state officials are concerned that the leadership of the Mormon Church may have been involved in a conspiracy to evade the California Fair Political Practices Act. Violations of the Act can, under some circumstances, be felony violations and result in prison. The leadership of the Mormon Church may face arrest and prosecution.

To put it plainly and simply: the Mormon Church lied. They are liars and they may very well be felons as well.
.
The Mormon Church began with a set of principles that make Mary Poppins and Snow White almost believable. It is a moronic story, but the U. S. Constitution defends the rights of Americans to believe whatever they want - no matter how nonsensical it may be. We draw the line, however, when religious morons try to force their own dysfunctional thinking on the rest of us.
.
The Mormon church needs to recognize that their authority extends only to their fellow Morons.
.
This is a very serious issue. A religious institution may be guilty of trying to manipulate a California election and interfere with the process of democracy in the United States. Charges may be far ranging and may include both California and federal criminal charges being brought against the leaders of the Mormon Church at Salt Lake City, Utah.

In addition to a full-scale investigation by the California Fair Political Practices Commission, some are calling for a federal investigation to be conducted by the FBI. Others want the Federal Elections Commission to assist in the investigation.

The California Fair Political Practices Commission report, filed with the secretary of state's office, listed a variety of California travel expenses for high-ranking members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and included $20,575 for use of facilities and equipment at the church's Salt Lake City headquarters and a $96,849 charge for "compensated staff time" for church employees who worked on matters pertaining to Prop. 8.

"This is exactly what we were talking about when we filed the suit," said Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate, which opposed the same-sex marriage ban. "They spent money on the campaign and were supposed to report it."

Church officials were not available for comment. Read more from the San Francisco Chronicle.

The next time you see Mormon Missionaries walking about in San Francisco, be sure you let them know what you think of their "church".

Emergency Radio Beacons (EPIRB) Switching to 406

The long-heralded phasing out of 121.5 and 243 MHz analog Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), which has been in the works since 2000, will begin Feb. 1. The Coast Guard and other search and rescue personnel will only receive distress alerts from digital 406 MHz EPIRBs.

The major advantage of the 406 MHz low earth orbit system is the provision of global Earth coverage using a limited number of polar-orbiting satellite. Coverage is not continuous, however, and it may take up to a couple of hours for an EPIRB alert to be received. To overcome this limitation, COSPAS-SARSAT has 406 MHz EPIRB repeaters aboard three geostationary satellites, plus one spare: GOES-W, at 135 deg W; GOES-E, at 75 deg W; INSAT-2A, at 74 deg E; and INSAT-2B (in-orbit spare), at 93.5 deg E. Ground stations capable of receiving 406 MHz. Except for areas between the United Kingdom and Norway, south of the east coast of Australia, and the area surrounding the Sea of Okhotsk near Russia, as well as polar areas, GEOSAR provides continuous global coverage of distress alerts from 406 MHz EPIRBs.

The decision to stop processing the analog 121.5/243 MHz signals was made by the International COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue safety program, with guidance from the United Nations. The Coast Guard said this was due to numerous signal reception problems and a high percentage of false alarms.

The
COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue satellite-aided tracking system, which monitors EPIRB signals, reports that the switch to 406 MHz beacons will offer many advantages to search and rescue agencies -- including reducing the number of false alerts and providing a more powerful and accurate signal, which can shrink a search area to about 100 yards and pinpoint the position of a distressed mariner within minutes. Follow this link for technical details about the switch-over.

Commercial vessels are required to have EPIRBs, and the Coast Guard recommends them for all recreational boaters.

EPIRB owners are required by law to provide emergency contact information and a vessel description when registering their beacons with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

In October, NOAA reported that a total of 6,000 people, including pilots, mariners and hikers, had been rescued in the United States as a result of distress signals picked up by NOAA satellites from emergency locator beacons and relayed to search and rescue authorities.

Information on the switchover from analog to digital EPIRBs is posted at
www.sarsat.noaa.gov.

USCGC Tern and Cal Nat'l Guard HH-60G Pavehawk Rescue Downed Pilot at Sea

OK, recruits, listen up! Here's the reason why you train and train and train:
.
Units of the U.S. Coast Guard and California National Guard rescued a San Francisco man who lost engine power on his single-engine airplane and landed in the water about 10 miles west of Pillar Point this afternoon.

Click on either to enlarge in a separate window or tab.

At approximately 3 p.m. the
C-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Sacramento, on a training mission nearby when they heard the mayday call over the radio, diverted to the scene and dropped a survival kit consisting of a life raft, survival suit, and flares to the man in the water. At the same time, the Coast Guard Cutter Tern, homeported at Yerba Buena Island, was diverted, along with a 47-foot MLB (motor life boat) from Station Golden Gate. The Pillar Point Harbor Master and a citizen also responded.

The crew of the Air National Guard HH-60G Pavehawk helicopter, from the 129th Rescue Wing at Moffett Air Field in Mountain View, had just completed joint training operations with the Coast Guard and was about to land at Air Station San Francisco when they were requested to divert to the scene. Arriving on scene at about 3:20 p.m. the Pavehawk hoisted the man and brought him back to the air station to receive emergency medical care.

The man was treated for hypothermia at the air station before being transported by emergency medical services to San Francisco General Hospital. The man’s plane sunk and was unsalvageable.

Prince Charles, son of Queen Elizabeth II and first in line to the British monarchy, holds the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy, so when he was visiting San Francisco last year he took the time to tour USCGC Tern.

Recycle Styrofoam (EPS) in San Francisco Bay Area

Properly disposing of expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) is an issue eventually each of us must face. EPS is most commonly (and inaccurately) known as ‘Styrofoam,’ which is actually a brand of home insulation trademarked by Dow Chemical.

Throwing EPS into the garbage means adding it to a landfill. Here are some suggestions for styrofoam recycling:

Reuse

Reusing EPS saves considerably more energy and resources than recycling does. Use pieces for light-weight drainage in planters (see below). Save it for future packaging needs. Electronic devices are best shipped or moved in their original EPS packaging and box.

Pass it on to an individual or company that can use it for packaging. Nearly 30% of all polystyrene loose fill (sometimes called 'peanuts' because of their shape) is used again. For mailing services, the reuse rate of loose fill is as high as 50%.

To find a local business that will reuse your packing peanuts, search at Plastic Loose Fill Council or Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers. Or call the Peanut Hotline at 800/828-2214. (Always call ahead to confirm peanuts are being accepted at that time.)

Recycle

If you can't reuse it, don’t throw it away. EPS can be recycled into new packaging. Before you drop off your EPS, please follow these simple EPS recycling etiquette guidelines:

- Drop off only EPS that is clean, dry and uncontaminated with other materials.

- Remove any foreign materials such as tape, stickers, labels, paint and cardboard.

- Contain the EPS in a bag, bundle or box for easy loading and unloading.
.
- Make sure the material is actually EPS -- it looks like a composite of small white beads. If you have any doubt, call before dropping it off.

In the San Francisco Bay Area:

FP International , 1050 Broadway Street, Redwood City, CA

Free-Flow Packaging International (FP International) recycles EPS at five locations across the United States. The Bay Area location is 1050 Broadway, Redwood City 94063. They accept ONLY baled EPS that can be offloaded directly into their building, by appointment only. (NO loose, bagged or stacked EPS.) Call or for a delivery appointment. See www.fpintl.com or contact Debby Hill at 1-, ext. 5385 () for more information.

EPS can be baled in any baler, even those currently used for corrugated or other paper. Or you can have it baled at: GB Industrial, 1528 Atlantic Street , Union City, CA 94587. GB Industrial also accepts will take clean plastic loosefill (packing peanuts) -- not printed on or dyed -- in bags and CD Cases/Jewel Boxes for recycling. Call .

If there is no EPS recycling available in your city, here are some options:

- Take your packing peanuts down to your neighborhood mailing outlet. (ALWAYS telephone ahead before dropping off your peanuts!)

- Gather together a large amount of EPS from neighbors to make the trip to a drop-off location worthwhile.

- While you're at it, give a call to your district representative and ask for an EPS recycling program for your city! (San Francisco's contact information is available at www.sfgov.org.)

The San Francisco Department of the Environment website is www.sfenvironment.org. This is a very useful resource.

San Francisco Wine Competition 2009 at Fort Mason

On Saturday, February 28, 2009, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) Public Tasting will return to the city by the Bay, indulging the palates of wine and food lovers alike. Acclaimed as the largest competition of American wines in the world and San Francisco’s premier tasting experience, the SFCWC Public Tasting is held at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion and features award winning wines from across the country.

The event commences with a thorough judging (the first of the season) by a panel of over 60 professional wine judges at the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds as they unite for four days in January. Rodney Strong Vineyards is proud to be the official host and sponsor of the 2009 SFCWC Annual Judges Dinner.

The SFCWC is much more than a wine tasting. Heightened by breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin County, and the San Francisco Bay, this unique affair celebrates the relationship between varietals and victuals, offering delicious hand-crafted creations from some of the world's premier artisan food purveyors. Fare includes award winning artisan breads, savory meats, exotic oils, hand crafted cheeses, delicious desserts, floral jams, sumptuous sauces, and fabulous creations from Bay Area restaurants. Everyone attending the SFCWC will receive a complimentary wine glass.

Founded in 1983 as the modestly sized Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition, the SFCWC has evolved immensely over the years, expanding its eligibility to wineries throughout the United States. In 2000, the event gained sponsorship from the San Francisco Chronicle and appropriately assumed the title the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

The Competition broke world records in 2007 with 3,800 American wines entered into competition, a number that established its position as the largest competition of American wines in the world. The 2008 competition raised the bar even higher, featuring an astounding 4,235 entries.

The beneficiary of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition annually is the Santa Rosa Junior College Wine Studies Program and Culinary Arts Program. The competition salutes these two programs for educational excellence in the field of wine studies and culinary arts. The 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is grateful to San Francisco Magazine, KGO-AM 810 NewsTalk, and NBC11, for their sponsorship and support, as well as to In Wine Country, American AgCredit, Artisan Bakers, City College of San Francisco Culinary Arts and Hospitality Program and the California Culinary Academy for their ongoing involvement and support.

Treasury Secretary Geithner Locks-Out Bank Lobbyists

In one of his first acts as Secretary of the Treasury, Timothy Geithner today announced new rules that will make it harder for banks to lobby for a share of money set aside by the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act.

The new rules restrict the contact that bank lobbyists can have with Treasury officials, as well as what members of Congress can do to secure money on behalf of banks in their home districts."

American taxpayers deserve to know that their money is spent in the most effective way to stabilize the financial system," Secretary Geithner said. "Today's actions reaffirm our commitment toward that goal."

Introducing him last night before he was sworn in, President Barack Obama spoke to the challenges Secretary Geithner faces, with a nod to the news that seven major American corporations -- including Caterpillar, Sprint/Nextel, and Home Depot -- announced they were cutting tens of thousands of jobs."

It will take a Secretary of the Treasury who understands those challenges in all their complexities to help lead us forward," President Obama said. "You've got your work cut out for you, as I think everybody knows. But you also have my full confidence, my deepest trust, and my unyeilding belief that you can achieve what is required of us at this moment."

Vice President Biden administered the oath of office to Geithner, who had been confirmed that afternoon."

We are at a moment of maximum challenge for our economy and our country," Secretary Geithner said in his remarks. "And our agenda, Mr. President, is to move quickly to help you do what the country asked you to do: to launch the programs that will bring economic recovery sooner; to make our economy more productive and more just in the opportunities it provides our citizens; to restore trust in our financial system with fundamental reform; to make our tax system better at rewarding work and investment; to restore confidence in America's economic leadership around the world. I pledge all of my ability to help you meet that challenge, and to restore to all Americans the promise of a better future."

As Secretary Geithner thanked his family for their support, he remarked that he was inspired to enter public service by childhood travels with his family."

My parents gave me, among many wonderful things, they gave me the important gift of showing me the world as a child," he said. "They took us to live in Zambia and Rhodesia, and then to India and to Thailand. And from those places, I saw America through the eyes of others. And it was that experience seeing the extraordinary influence of America on the world that led me to work in government."

USCGC Pike Responds to Adrift Oil Tanker Leaving San Francisco Bay

The Coast Guard, along with commercial tug vessels, and the California Department of Fish and Game responded to a vessel, which lost propulsion last night and began drifting close to the Golden Gate Bridge and the rocky Marin Headlands.

At 5:24 p.m., the Petroleum Oil Tank Ship Overseas Cleliamar lost power shortly after transiting under the Golden Gate Bridge while outbound from San Francisco enroute to its next port of call in Ecuador. Within ten minutes, the crew was able to drop the starboard anchor to stabilize the vessel’s position, restored power and backed down under its own power . The vessel had previously discharged its cargo during its port call at Martinez and was carrying no cargo at the time of the incident.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco immediately launched the Coast Guard Cutter Pike, an 87-foot patrol boat from Yerba Buena Island, three response vessels from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate, and a helicopter from Air Station San Francisco. Four tug boats also responded to assist. Station Golden Gate and Sector San Francisco are units of the Eleventh Coast Guard District with headquarters at Coast Guard Island at Alameda in San Francisco Bay, which is itself part of the larger Coast Guard Pacific Area Command, also with command HDQ at Coast Guard Island in San Francisco Bay.

At 7:22 p.m., an overflight conducted by the Coast Guard helicopter yielded no sign of oil and a visual sweep of the vessel’s hull did not indicate any damage.

The initial assessment by all vessels on scene showed no signs of pollution, and no injuries were reported by any of the 32 crew members onboard. The Coast Guard conducted alcohol testing on the pilot, the master of the vessel, and additional crewmembers with negative results. Additional tests are pending.

Two commercial oil response boats, the Coast Guard Cutter Pike and assets from Station Golden Gate, Station San Francisco, Station Vallejo will remain on scene through the night and into the morning. An overflight will be conducted by the Coast Guard at first light Wednesday morning. Coast Guard Marine Inspectors and Investigators attended the vessel and will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident.

The Overseas Cleliamar is 741-feet long, 38,653 gross tons, and is registered in the Marshall Islands. The Overseas Cleliamar is a Panamax-class vessel. The ship is owned by Overseas Shipholding Group of New York.

USCGC Pike was built by Bollinger Shipyard, Inc. of Lockport, Louisiana, in September 2005. This vessel employs the latest advances in navigation and marine technology. A fully integrated electronics suite coordinates radar, satellite navigation, gyrocompass, autopilot and computer generated charts to form a compact and user-friendly command and control system for the ship’s personnel.

After weathering Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, and Tropical Storm Gamma, Lt.j.g. Bixler and his crew safely navigated more than 4,700 nautical miles from Louisiana to California. During their trip, the Pike crew delivered 1,500 pounds of disaster relief supplies to Guatemala, received a visit from the U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua, performed two port security assessments, and conducted a professional exchange and nation building exercise with the Colombian Navy.

The Pike is one of the most advanced coastal patrol boats in the world and is helping the U.S. Coast Guard to respond to America’s maritime needs well into the 21st Century.

USS Green Bay (LPD 20) - Welcome to the Fleet

Sailors assigned to USS Green Bay (LPD 20) brought their ship to life during a commissioning ceremony January 24 at the port of Long Beach, Calif.

The amphibious landing dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20) was built by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Avondale Operations in New Orleans. The ship is home ported in San Diego. (U.S. Navy photo -click to enlarge in a separate window or tab)

The Navy commissioned the fourth amphibious transport dock ship of the San Antonio-class to honor the first settlement in Wisconsin, the "city by the bay."

"I have never known a city with such a legendary spirit, sense of community and purpose as Green Bay embodies," said Rear Adm. Michael Shatynski, vice commander, Naval Surface Forces. "All of the qualities that I identify in your great city, I identify in the Navy-Marine Corps team."

Rose Magnus, wife of Gen. Robert Magnus, former assistant commandant of the Marine Corps and ship's sponsor uttered the famous words of a commissioning ceremony, "Man your ship and bring her to life."

The crew answered the call. Within a few minutes the men and women of USS Green Bay lined the rails of the new ship while the call to battle stations rang. A pair of Marine Corps CH-53 Sea Stallions performed a fly-by over the ship."

"I hold the crew to high expectations," said Command Master Chief Cecilio Macias about the ship's upcoming tests. "During pre-com they did well. Now, we have to get the ship ready to go on deployment."

Green Bay is a multi-task ship in the amphibious Navy that will perform the mission of four previous classes of ships. With its modern capabilities Green Bay will be a key factor in littoral combat operations which call for the projection of sea power deep inland; part of the Chief of Naval Operations' Maritime Strategy for the 21st Century.

Green Bay will accommodate the Marine Corps' "mobility triad," an attack strategy that involves advanced amphibious assault vehicles, landing craft air cushion and the vertical/short takeoff and landing tactical aircraft MV-22 Osprey.

Green Bay is the second ship to bear the name of Wisconsin's largest city. The first was the patrol gunboat USS Green Bay (PG 101), which served from 1969 to 1977. The current Green Bay is also the first Navy warship commissioned in the Los Angeles area since 1994.

USS Green Bay's homeport is Naval Station San Diego.

President Obama Speaks to Arab TV network, Al Arabiya

In his first interview with an Arab television station, President Barack Obama offered a bold change to America's relations with the Muslim world.
.
About the photo: a screen capture of President Obama's satellite-transmitted television interview with Dubai-based Al Arabiya.

"My job is to communicate to the American people that the Muslim world is filled with extraordinary people who simply want to live their lives and see their children live better lives," President Obama told Al Arabiya. "My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy."

In the interview, conducted in the White House map room, President Obama also expressed his commitment to tackling the Middle East peace process immediately.

"Sending George Mitchell to the Middle East is fulfilling my campaign promise that we're not going to wait until the end of my administration to deal with Palestinian and Israeli peace, we're going to start now," he said. "It may take a long time to do, but we're going to do it now."

The interview is part of the President’s broader outreach to the Muslim world, which includes a promise to make a major address from the capital of a Muslim nation.

The President pointed out that he had lived in the world’s largest Muslim nation, Indonesia for several years while growing up, and said his travels through Muslim countries had convinced him that regardless of faith, people had certain common hopes and dreams. In the interview, President Obama called for resumed negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians and said his administration wanted to begin by listening and talking to all parties involved in the conflict without prejudging their concerns.

He also praised Saudi King Abdulla for putting forward an Arab peace plan and said his administration would adopt a more extensive and regional approach in its relationship with the Muslim world.

Trashing George Bush

Everybody is trashing George Bush - badly.

In his first seven days in office, President Obama has banned the use of CIA interrogation torture tactics, ordered the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison facility and began the process of bringing our troops home from Iraq. He also imposed stringent limits on lobbyists, unveiled an $825 billion stimulus plan, and ordered a halt to any last-minute rules and regulations put in place by his predecessor. The President is working hard to bury the disasters brought upon us by eight years of George W. Bush.

Deepak Chopra, the best-selling author and speaker who advocates spiritual awakening, emotional well being and ayurvedic health wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of George Bush: "The Bush years were a time of serious betrayal of the truth and the degradation of America's ideals. Acts of torture, illegal surveillance, trampled civil rights, the hounding of liberals from the civil service to be replaced by right-wing fundamentalists, callous indifference to the plight of Katrina's victims, and of course the deceptions leading up to the Iraq War, all deserve condemnation. Some deserve prosecution under the law. Outraged citizens and legislators are calling for such prosecutions, up to and including ex-President Bush and Vice President Cheney." Ouch!

The Economist.com put it this way: "HE LEAVES the White House as one of the least popular and most divisive presidents in American history. At home, his approval rating has been stuck in the 20s for months; abroad, George Bush has presided over the most catastrophic collapse in America’s reputation since the second world war. The American economy is in deep recession, brought on by a crisis that forced Mr Bush to preside over huge and unpopular bail-outs. America is embroiled in two wars, one of which Mr Bush launched against the tide of world opinion. The Bush family name, once among the most illustrious in American political life, is now so tainted that Jeb, George’s younger brother, recently decided not to run for the Senate from Florida. A Bush relative describes family gatherings as “funeral wakes”."

The Washington Post used these terms to describe the Bush Presidency back in 2006 in an article titled, Move Over Mr. Hoover: "Shortly after Thanksgiving I had dinner in California with Ronald Reagan's best biographer, Lou Cannon. Like many historians these days, we discussed whether George W. Bush is, conceivably, the worst U.S. president ever." And that was back in 2006! Now, in 2009, the Washington Post is absolutely convinced.

Julian Zelizer is professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University's prestigious Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs wrote: "Right now there is not a lot of good will among historians. Most see him as a combination of many negative factors. He is seen as incompetent in terms of how he handled domestic and foreign policy. He is seen as pushing for an agenda to the right of the nation and doing so through executive power that ignored the popular will."

Harvard University political history lecturer and writer Barbara Kellerman said, ""The level of incompetence after the initial 'mission accomplished' was so acute that my guess is, even if the decision to invade might be historically justified, the incompetence that succeeded it ... I think that's going to be very difficult to ever alter our negative perception of that."

The most succinct comments of all were the choices made for music to which Barack and Michelle danced at some of the inaugural balls. Repeatedly we saw the President and First Lady dance to the soaring notes of At Last, the famous song that celebrates a change ... at last ... and was made famous by Etta James and re-introduced to younger generations of Americans by Céline Dion and Beyoncé Knowles.

At Last!

Thank God Almighty we are free at last.

President Obama's Rolling Bomb Shelter

We've all seen news images of President Obama's rolling bomb shelter that is disguised as a Cadillac limousine. Details on the Obama limo (called Cadillac One) are difficult to get, but here are some of the details.

The U. S. Secret Service prefers to play their cards close to the vest and they are saying as little as possible about the Presidential Limousine, officially known as the Presidential State Car. However I found an interesting graphic originally published in the British edition of the Christian Science Monitor.
It describes some high-tech (but unconfirmed) features that come with the limousine. If you click on the graphic you should be able to enlarge it in a separate window or tab. Apparently President Obama's new limousine makes James Bond's mythical spy car look like a horse and buggy.

The story accompanying the graphic puts it this way: "It’s like a tank. Secret Service agents are calling it “The Beast.” Reportedly the armor surrounding the car is at least five inches thick making it, as some news outlets have put it, “rocket-resistant.” Others have joked it could withstand a collision with an asteroid."

The San Francisco Chronicle puts it in perspective noting, “a half-inch of transparent armor is enough to stop a .44 Magnum round at point-blank range; at a thickness of 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches, the same material can withstand higher-velocity bullets fired from military assault rifles.”
The windows, of course, are bulletproof. The tires reportedly can’t get a flat or if they do, it makes no difference, the car keeps rolling. And the interior is like a cocoon - a really safe cocoon reportedly impervious to chemical attacks.

Wikipedia has some additional information to offer, such as: "The car can seat seven people, including the president. The front seats two, and includes a console-mounted communications center. A glass partition divides the front from back. Three rear facing seats are in the back, with cushions that are able to fold over the partition. The two rear seats are reserved for the president and another passenger; these seats have the ability to recline individually. A folding desk is between the two rear seats. Storage compartments in the interior panels of the car contain communications equipment."

Car and Driver commented, "We’re told an interior using high-quality leather like that seen in the CTS goes along for the ride and that Cadillac’s newfound love of LED lighting extends to spotlights shining on the fender-mounted flag standards. There are several Presidential seals strategically placed inside and out."

Angel Island Restored Historic Immigration Station Opens Presidents Day Weekend

On Presidents Day weekend, Feb. 15, 2009, the public will have access for the first time to all areas of the historically significant
Immigration Station barracks on Angel Island State Park.

The $15 million restoration is phase one of a $65 million, five-phase project to preserve and rehabilitate Angel Island’s historic U.S. Immigration Station, the “Ellis Island of the West.”

The facility opened on Jan. 21, 1910 and closed in 1940 after a fire destroyed the administration building. During that time more than one million individuals were processed through the center; historians estimate that 175,000 Chinese immigrants and 150,000 Japanese immigrants were processed at Angel Island. Because of discriminatory legislation enacted in the 1880s Chinese immigrants were detained on average two to three weeks; the longest recorded stay was about two years.

Their frustration and fear left an indelible legacy: hundreds of poems etched into the barrack walls. Discovered by a park ranger in the 1970s the poems had been painted over. Beneath those carvings were even more poems written in pencil and ink. One unknown author wrote, “Imprisoned in the wooden building day after day, my freedom is withheld; how can I bear to talk about it?”

The Immigration Station was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1997 and listed as one of “America’s 11 Most Endangered” historic places in 1999 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Ferry service to Angel Island is available from Fisherman’s Wharf,
Tiburon and Alameda/Oakland.
