Brilliant choice by outgoing Mayor (new Lt. Governor) Gavin Newsom. As San Francisco Chief of Police, George Gascon's performance has earned him the respect and support of many San Franciscans and I am proudly among them. George Gason was the perfect choice.

Currently serving as the District Attorney for San Francisco. He was sworn in on January 9, 2011, by Mayor Gavin Newsom, succeeding Kamala Harris, who was elected California Attorney General.
George Gascon is the former chief of the San Francisco Police Department. He held the position from August 7, 2009, to January 9, 2011, succeeding Heather Fong.
Gascon previously served as chief of police with the Mesa Police Department for three years and with the Los Angeles Police Department(LAPD) for 28 years. From 1981 to 1987, he had a career in business management while serving as a reserve officer prior to returning to law enforcement full time.
Gascón earned a bachelor of arts in history from California State University, Long Beach, and a juris doctor from Western State University College of Law. He is an active member of the California State Bar.
Chief Gascon is of Hispanic descent (Cuban-American).
