Obama Calls Meeting with 40 Governors on Tuesday

President-elect Barack Obama is meeting with nearly all the U.S. governors in Philadelphia next Tuesday to discuss how the economic crisis is crimping states and their budgets.

Nick Shapiro, a spokesman for the Obama transition, said the meeting will provide an opportunity for the President-elect and Vice President-elect Joe Biden to talk with state chief executives about "the unique challenges facing our states."

The discussions are being hosted by National Governors Association Chairman Ed Rendell and Vice Chairman Jim Douglas.

Douglas said 40 governors and governors-elect plan to attend the group discussion, which was put together just in the last few days, at the city's famed Independence Hall, the birthplace of our nation where the Declaration of Independence was signed .

"It's short notice, some grumbled, but virtually everyone has cleared his or her calendar," said Douglas, the Republican governor of Vermont.

Silly Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska and running mate to Obama's Republican opponent in the presidential race, Sen. John McCain, also planned to attend the gathering, her office said.

A Call to All Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan Vets: Help Vet Jim Martin Now!

Here's a call to all America's Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan Vets.

Jim Martin is a Veitnam Vet and he's fighting a runoff race in georgia for the U. S. Senate. His opposition is an ultra-conservative Republican who has a solid record of voting AGAINST VETERANS.

Jim needs our help now. The election is not over!

It's true: The 2008 elections aren't over yet! Though enthusiastic voters across the nation sent Barack Obama to the White House on November 4th and elected dozens more Democrats to Congress, our work isn't quite finished yet.

In just a few days, on December 2nd, voters in Georgia will have a run-off election to decide whether to elect
Democrat Jim Martin and give Barack Obama another vote in the U.S. Senate or to send incumbent Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss back to Washington where he'll continue the right-wing's obstructionism.

(note: Sarah Palin is going into Georgia to stump for Republican Saxby Chambliss)

This is a critical race – electing Jim Martin could move us one step closer to a 60 vote, filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate – and you can make a huge difference, right now. The online phone banking tool used all over the country to "get out the vote" for Barack Obama on November 4th is now being used to "get out the vote" for Jim Martin, and I hope you'll use it to help Jim win on December 2nd.

Will you make just 10 phone calls to Democratic voters and remind them to vote for Jim Martin next week?

Click here to phone Democratic voters in Georgia from the comfort of your own home right now – and help Democrat Jim Martin win a Senate seat on December 2nd!

Jim Martin is a Vietnam veteran and served for 18 years as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. As a state legislator, he was a leader on health care issues and helped provide quality and affordable health care to thousands of Georgia's children. Jim continued his work for children at the Georgia Department of Human Resources which he led under two Governors, working hard to protect foster children and put them in loving homes.

On the other hand, if there's anyone who's made Swiftboating an art form, it's Saxby Chambliss. 6 years ago, he defeated Democratic Senator Max Cleland, a Vietnam veteran and triple-amputee, by questioning his patriotism and running ads comparing him to Osama Bin Laden. Right after 9-11, these types of despicable tactics may have worked. But it's time to move beyond Swiftboaters to people like Jim Martin.

The Martin campaign's goal is to have as many out-of-state activists as possible call Democratic voters in Georgia so that their 150+ volunteer Field Organizers and thousands of volunteers on the ground can focus on knocking on doors and having face-to-face conversations with voters.

They just need our help to remind Georgia Democrats to get out and vote for Jim Martin on December 2nd. Only a few minutes of your time – and 10 phone calls – will make a huge difference. Will you help?

Click here to phone Democratic voters in Georgia from the comfort of your own home right now – and help Democrat Jim Martin win a Senate seat on December 2nd!

This is a can-do mission. Please make a few phone calls for Jim. We can win this election and send a strong voice for vets to Washington.

San Francisco's Dolby Labs Investing Heavily in 3-D Movies

San Francisco’s Dolby Laboratories sees its future in 3-D.

With at least 40 major Hollywood movies scheduled for release in 3-D in the next several years, theater owners worldwide are investing heavily in 3-D projection technology. And while the field is now dominated by a Southern California firm that got out front of the 3-D wave, in just a year Dolby has grabbed a significant share of the world’s 3-D market.
Click here to see Dolby's promotion for the movie, Bolt, created in 3-D.

Since debuting its 3-D system in October of 2007, Dolby has sold 631 projection kits, which retail for $26,000, in more than two dozen countries. The company also supplies 3-D components to other projector manufacturers and licenses its technology to other makers of digital cinema playback devices. Revenue from 3-D — at $16.4 million — is still a small part of Dolby’s overall sales, which totalled $640.2 million in fiscal year 2008.

Real D of Beverly Hills, which began selling its system in 2002, claims its system is on 1,600 screens worldwide, about 1,350 of them in the United States.

In addition, specifically for the Gay and Lesbian Community, San Francisco offers these holiday events:

Milk, the Movie

LGBT pioneer Harvey Milk appears on the silver screen this fall, thanks to director Gus Van Sant and Sean Penn, who spent much of this year filming all over the City, but particularly in the Castro District, historically recreated to suggest the free flying 1970's.

"Milk," the movie, showing at the Castro Theatre Nov. 26 - Dec. 23, and benefiting LGBT charities, will give renewed attention to this bold activist and the LGBT community from which he emerged. There is already Oscar buzz… See the movie (see the trailer here); then explore the neighborhood. Click here for tickets.

Crusin' the Castro

In addition to the popular Cruisin' the Castro, the original walking tour, where you will see America's only Pink Triangle Memorial Park, the original site of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the first gay bar with transparent windows on the street, and much more, check out the new Come Out to the Castro, led by a local comedian or Sister Betty's Walking Tour, both revealing the quirkier side of this rich neighborhood. All of these guided treks will point out the famous and lesser known spots frequented by Harvey Milk. Other than a few steep hills and those deadly "drag traps," or street grates, strolling is relaxed and easy.

December Shows

December brings holiday shows of every description, but pay special attention to these three offerings from within our LGBT community: The SF Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band presents "The Dance Along Nutcracker" where the audience is invited to leave their seats and join in self-expressive abandon at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Dec. 13-14.

Dec. 15-17 brings Donna Sachet's 16th annual "Songs of the Season," a musical variety show offers something for everyone; featuring great local soloists and benefiting the AIDS Emergency Fund.

Finish up the holiday season at one of three performances on Christmas Eve of "Home for the Holidays" at the Castro Theatre with the venerable San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, now in its 31st year of performing, conducted by Dr. Kathleen McGuire.

Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz

Wicked: The untold story of the ladies of Oz — the green-skinned Wicked Witch and the pure-of-heart Glinda the Good Witch — is being brought to San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre this January by Carol Shorenstein Hays' theatrical production company, SHN Broadway Reframed.
Tickets for the musical, one of Broadway's biggest blockbusters, are now available!

Mark Leno is California State Senator-elect representing the 3rd Senate District which includes the people of San Francisco and Marin Counties. Mark won the seat from another member of our family, Carol Migden, who is retiring to her home in Marin County. Mark is currently our California State Assemblymember, the seat just won by Tom.

San Francisco's Fabulous Lesbian Chefs

Some of the finest food in San Francisco comes from a small community of some of the world's greatest chefs - and many of them in San Francisco are lesbian. It's not that gay men are not also great chefs. It just seems that lesbians in San Francisco are particularly impressive (and for the record: I am not discriminating against straight people. It's just that they always get the good press, so forget them this time around).

Free Holiday Dinners in San Francisco:

Several local churches and other organizations will offer free Holiday dinners on December 24th and/or december 25th for those in need and for those who don't want to spend the holiday alone. Please keep in mind that these organizations are in desperate need of cash donations and can also use your help if you would like to volunteer.

Here are a several offerings:

Tenderloin Tessie

One of San Francisco's oldest community meals by and for members of the LGBT community, Tenderloin Tessie's Thanksgiving dinner is now in its 31st year. .The Tenderloin Tessie dinner features roast turkey, gravy, stuffing, potatoes and vegetables, coffee and beverages, pumpkin pie and a special gift bag takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church at (at Geary) in San Francisco. Volunteers are always welcome; call Toby Nelson at .

Glide Memorial Church - Rev Cecil Williams

Glide Memorial Church will host a special Thanksgiving celebration and is expecting 4,500 people for its annual holiday meal. Glide operates one of the largest free meal programs in San Francisco. ."At Glide we reach out to everyone. No one should be left out and the need is more critical this year," said the Reverend Cecil Williams..Glide starts off the day with Celebration, the worship and music service at 10 a.m. (usually 9 am and 11 am on non-holidays). Holiday meals will be served from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 330 Ellis Street in San Francisco. .Volunteers and donations are welcome. To sign up call . To make a cash donation, visit the Web site or send checks to Glide Memorial, . Food donations should be dropped off at the side entrance of the church.

St. Anthony Dining Room - The Franciscan Friars

St. Anthony Dining Room, a part of the larger St. Anthony Foundation was founded by the Franciscan Friars who are members of the Order of Friars Minor - O.F.M. of St. Boniface Church, located in the depth of The Tenderloin. Drop off your holiday gifts of clothing, turkeys, food and monetary donations to . To volunteer please call or send an email to .

A note about volunteering:

All four of these organizations welcome volunteers. Glide Church and St. Anthony's Dining Room always have more volunteers for the special Holiday meals than they need. In the case of both Glide and St. Anthony's the best thing you can do for them is to give them a generous donation. Money is the one thing they both have way too little of.

MCC and Tenderloin Tessie rely much more on volunteers. Volunteers, for both these groups are not only warmly welcome, they are absolutely necessary to make the dinners work. Both the MCC and Tenderloin Tessie dinners are smaller than the Glide and St. Anthony's efforts and as result they get fewer donations, but are equally in need of support. Keep that in mind if you are thinking about making a donation. And, by the way, the Tenderloin Tessie Dinner has grown quite large in recent years - which means their need for both money and volunteers have grown as well.

Donations of small quantities of canned goods or other food items are not very useful to any of the organizations. They need very large quantities of identical items. The best way to help these groups serve holiday meals to those in need is to write several or all them generous checks.

The other thing you can do to help is get involved: volunteer on a day that is not a major holiday. Keep in mind that both Glide and St. Anthony's Dining Room serve hot meals to thousands of people every day of the year from their Tenderloin locations. You have 365 days in every year available to you to volunteer.

About A.C.T.

Founded in 1965 by William Ball, A.C.T. opened its first San Francisco season at the Geary Theater in 1967. In the 1970s, A.C.T. solidified its national and international reputation, winning a Tony Award for outstanding theater performance and training in 1979. During the past three decades, more than 300 A.C.T. productions have been performed to a combined audience of seven million people; today, A.C.T.'s performance, education, and outreach programs annually reach more than 250,000 people in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1996, A.C.T.'s efforts to develop creative talent for the theater were recognized with the prestigious Jujamcyn Theaters Award.

Today A.C.T. is nationally recognized for its groundbreaking productions of classical works and bold explorations of contemporary playwriting. Since the reopening of the American Conservatory Theater (formerly the Geary) in 1996, A.C.T. has enjoyed a remarkable period of audience expansion and renewed financial stability. The company continues to produce challenging theater in the rich context of symposia, audience discussions, and community interaction.

The conservatory, led by Melissa Smith and George Thompson, now serves 3,000 students every year. It was the first actor training program in the United States not affiliated with a college or university accredited to award a master of fine arts degree. Danny Glover, Annette Bening, Denzel Washington, Benjamin Bratt, and Anika Noni Rose are among the conservatory's distinguished former students. With its commitment to excellence in actor training and to the relationship between training, performance, and audience, the A.C.T. Master of Fine Arts Program has moved to the forefront of America's actor training programs, while serving as the creative engine of the company at large.

A.C.T. operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theaters and Actors' Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States.

A.C.T. is a constituent of Theatre Communications Group, the national organization for the nonprofit professional theater.

A.C.T. is a member of the League of Resident Theaters, Theatre Bay Area, Union Square Association, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, and San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The directors employed by A.C.T. at the American Conservatory Theater are members of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, Inc., an independent national labor union.

A.C.T. is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund.
