An urgent message to the people of San Francisco and all California from Kamala D. Harris, District Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco:
Yesterday, I spoke at the Bayview Multi-Purpose Senior Center to a group of San Francisco residents who share the concerns of a majority of Californians. The room was filled with seniors worried about losing their homes to foreclosure, or worse, losing their livelihood to unscrupulous predators claiming to be economic saviors who offer "help" to distressed homeowners and then charge fees for that help.
I announced that the San Francisco District Attorney's office, in conjunction with the City Assessor & Recorder, will crack down on mortgage and investment fraud and educate homeowners on how to protect themselves. Click here to see TV news coverage of the meeting.
As the San Francisco Chronicle reports today: "Hucksters and con men seeking to cheat beleaguered homeowners with fake mortgage refinance schemes face increased likelihood of prosecution, according to a new campaign announced Wednesday in San Francisco."
Combined with our goal of pursuing these predators to the fullest extent of the law, our goal is to rid our city and state of these selfish criminals. In the upcoming days, my office will debut a brand new prevention campaign to help homeowners educate themselves on the prevalence of economic predators and provide them instructions on how to avoid fraud.
Vulnerable residents desperate for relief should not be preyed upon. We need to ensure our at-risk homeowners and low-income families are not exploited.
With the economy presently in its most dire state in decades, it is essential that Californians have access to the best and safest economic practices available to them. I will stand up for hard working California families and work with our elected leaders in Sacramento to ensure the voices of the most vulnerable members of society will be heard. We all know that times are tough, but the winds of change are blowing in America. We need to make those winds blow here in California, to tip the scales of justice back into balance so that all Californians are protected from financial fraud and those who prey on our most vulnerable citizens.
Thank you for your support.
- Kamala Harris
