Here's an odd story I noticed on an ABC News site today. It comes out of the state of South Carolina where the governor has gone missing. Governor Mark Sanford has been missing (so to speak) from the state capitol since last Thursday.
His staff say they know where Sanford is and that he is taking some time in seclusion to "recharge". His wife told the Associated Press that "he was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids." But both his wife and the lieutenant governor say they don't know for sure where the governor is.
Sanford lost a public battle against President Obama's stimulus plan a few weeks ago in which he refused to take several million in federal dollars for South Carolina schools. He was against future requirements that accepting the federal money would bring.
If nothing more, today's confusion is turning into a bit of a public relations nightmare. If Sanford had thoughts of a future in national politics, this kind of stunt is a real future-killer. Let's just hope this story doesn't turn out to be something more sinister.
