Chevron Chairman v. Sierra Club Boss - Slugout!


Last Thursday evening was the much-anticipated Commonwealth Club / Climate One conversation/debate between Dave O'Reilly, Chairman of Chevron Corporation and Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club. It was their first-ever meeting.

Before a packed audience at the Nikko Hotel in San Francisco, they discussed issues ranging from nuclear power to Congressional legislation on carbon emissions to the timetable for reducing greenhouse gases. Capably moderated by Wall Street Journal Deputy Managing Editor Alan Murray, the conversation surfaced some very interesting areas of agreement, as well as differences.

At several points, Mr. O'Reilly and Mr. Pope shook hands and agreed to cooperate in areas where their organizations have common interests, such as trying to move the country away from reliance on coal as a source of energy.
