Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

Halloween in the Castro No More!
I was very pleased to hear that Halloween in the Castro has been canceled. It is not, nor has it been, a holiday for the people living in the Castro. For them it has been a nightmare.
It has been a night when arrogant and disrespectful visitors who are mainly from the Valley (the majority of whom are straight) invade the Castro and spend hours demonstrating their close familial relationship with baboons.
Halloween, not Labor Day, is absolutely the best day to close the Bay Bridge. That will effectively raise the moat and protect us from an invasion of the Valley People.
Those roaming young thugs who prey on San Francisco citizens are another problem. Many of them, unfortunately, live in San Francisco. Easily recognized by their baggy-pants and droopy drawers, these misfits are our most dangerous.
The SFPD is going to have their hands full trying to hold back the Halloween tsunami. I'm not sure what the citizenry can do to help, but this matter is serious and we should all ask ourselves what we can do to help, or at least, how we can avoid making things worse for our City employees who are out there trying to keep us all safe.

i've read many articles about halloween in the castro 2007 and this is the most absurd. "thugs, the valley..." i think there is some already established hate towards a certain group that might be a personal problem. i live in the castro and have for the past 22 years. halloween in the castro is going to happen count on it. Blocking off streets in the castro is a tradition not only for halloween but new years as well. Happy Halloween!!
