This weekend and the first part of next week are going to be Triple-M Days (Major Money Makers) for San Francisco as we welcome Major League Baseball's All-Star Game to the Giants Ballpark (currently branded as AT&T Park).
City and event planners are anticipating upwards of 250,000 visitors coming into the City. The five-day-long FanFest will offer activities and tourist excursions beginning this weekend. The town will be flooded with visitors.
If you're not one of the Giants 28,000 season ticket holders, or a close friend of one, you're very likely out of luck if you want to see the game on Tuesday. Thirteen thousand tickets went to the MLB and another 2,000 were sold in a lottery.
However, if you have a lot of equity in your home or an impressive line of credit, then you may still be able to afford a ticket from one of the scalpers who are sure to be on every street-corner near the ball park. Personally I plan to stay entirely away from the area and leave the tourist destinations to our paying guests.
The City will realize a revenue of up to $2-million in sales tax and hotel tax receipts. That's just the gross, however. We need to deduct the $700,000 we are spending on extra SFPD, MUNI and DPT services. Still, we should realize a nice profit from it all and these figures only reflect direct revenue to the City. Millions more will be spent at local hotels, restaurants, bars and local attractions.
