Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

Norcal Waste & Sunset Scavenger - BRAVO
Sometimes it takes a real case of FUBAR before we are thankful for what we have.
The case ofWaste Managementover in the East Bay is a good example. They locked-out their workers and since then have demonstrated with brilliant clarity that they are completely inept and totally unable to provide garbage pick-up services for the people in the East Bay who rely upon them.

Fruitvale, East Oakland and West Oakland are all but being ignored by Waste Management. The company seems to be using scabs to pick-up garbage in affluent areas, but leaving the poor areas to their own devices. Waste Management's management is rotten to the core. The company does not deserve to keep the contracts they have.
Here in San Francisco we do not contract with Waste Management and thank God for that!
Norcal Waste Systems Inc, the parent of Sunset Scavenger, is not only headquartered in San Francisco, but the company is 100% employee-owned and operated. That's precisely the kind of operation we like to see in San Francisco.
Additionally, Norcal Waste Systems is the recipient of the 2006 California Waste Reduction Award. Each year California awards companies for their outstanding efforts to reduce waste and protect the environment. It's called the Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP), and is sponsored by the California Integrated Waste Management Board - the state's primary recycling agency and part of the Environmental Protection Agency. Norcal Waste Systems has been recognized as a company that strives to reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycle-content products as part of their environmentally preferable business practices.
So, today I have discovered yet another reason why life is good in San Francisco - and not so good in the East Bay.
