SF Fire Dept and Local TV News Drama

With all the television news coverage of grass fires - even small little grass fires - I think it is time for a reality check.

While a dry grass fire burning along side a highway is great drama for a TV news crew, could have a substantial impact of the daily commute and might always jump a line and endanger homes, it is still true that the San Francisco Fire Department, a much larger force than most in the Bay Area, is regularly involved in equal drama, but seldom draws the attention of the TV news crews.

Case in point:

Bill Cereske is known throughout the SFFD as Bill, the Gear Wizard. He sells SFFD-themed shirts, sweats, and other gear. As Bill states on his web site, "All gear may be purchased and used freely by anybody, on the condition that you never misrepresent yourself. Everything I have here is sold with a 100% satisfaction guarantee - because I only handle "The Good Stuff - Firefighter Tough."

Bill also sends out a weekly e-letter with SFFD news tidbits. Today's letter brought a brief little story about something that was missed by all the local news media. Here it is just as Bill wrote it:

"A baseball (game) Saturday was interrupted by fire breaking out on a hillside in McLaren Park, which took three engines and a mini-pumper to the fight. Minutes later, a fire broke out in the Ingleside district, mere blocks away! For a time, almost every piece of firefighting apparatus in the south 1/3 of The City was either on these 2 fires, or involved with other incidents. No baseball activities were bothered, and the news media didn't notice (as far as I could tell). As usual, both of these serious firefighting challenges were met head on by the SFFD and both were safely extinguished by the time the sun set on our fair city."
