On June 3 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi introduced a proposed ballot measure for a charter amendment to change the make-up of the Recreation and Park Commission. Co-sponsors are Supervisors Avalos, Campos, Daly, and Mar.
Currently, all seven commissioners are appointed by the mayor, as is the general manager of the Recreation and Park Department (RPD), which the Commission oversees. The amendment would divide appointments to the commission, with the mayor appointing three commissioners, the Board of Supervisors appointing three, and the mayor together with the president of the Board of Supervisors appointing one.
The proposed amendment would allow more public leverage on the RPD, whose direction is now sometimes biased towards the mayor's directives and at odds with members of the public.
WhatYouCanDo
