Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

Cruise Ships Diverted from Mexico to San Francisco
If you would like to know which cruise ships are currently docked at San Francisco, go to BoatingSF and click on live ship positions. You will be treated to a plot map animation of the most recent one-hour of ship traffic on San Francisco Bay. Hover your curser over the ship icons and the ship's name, type, length and destination will pop up for you. With this map you will be able to identify every ship on the Bay. Have fun.
Spotted this post inSFist, an excellent local San Francisco blog:
With theswine flualmost reachingpandemic levels, cruise ships that were scheduled to head down south to Mexico will insteaddock at the Port of San Francisco, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, and Seattle. According toSF Chron, "there were nine ship calls scheduled in May before the flu kept the ships out of Mexico. Now 18 are scheduled" to make appearances on the waterfront.
San Francisco, it seems, sees "50 to 60 cruise ship calls a year"; this year, however, we'll have 70. What does this mean? An extra $500,000 in city revenue. "It's excellent," squealed Port of San Francisco marketing director Michael Nerney. Also, in related mixed-message news, SF health officials would like you tostop overreactingto the pig sniffles, please.
