Supervisor Carmen Chu - She's Permanent!

Luke Thomas, a talented San Francisco journalist who publishes Fog City Journal, published this piece about Mayor Newsom's permanent appointment of Carmen Chu to the Board of Supervisors to replace Ed Jew who resigned under pressure from San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera.

Here's Luke's story:

After an outpouring of support from District 4 residents, Mayor Gavin Newsom today administered the oath of office to Supervisor Carmen Chu.

Her appointment comes on the heels of embattled former Supervisor Ed Jew's resignation from office yesterday. Following Jew's resignation, Newsom indicated Chu was a frontrunner for the appointment.

Chu was named interim District 4 Supervisor after Newsom suspended Jew in September.

In a short statement released a few moments ago, Newsom said: "Over the last two days, there has been an outpouring of support from the community for Supervisor Carmen Chu. It is clear that she has done an extraordinary job for her constituents as an interim Supervisor, and I am proud to say that she has agreed to serve as a member of the Board of Supervisors. Today at 5:38 p.m. I administered the oath of office to Supervisor Carmen Chu. I am confident that in this role she will continue to distinguish herself as an advocate for her constituents."

A District 4 special election will be held in November to allow voters to elect Chu or another candidate to a 4-year term.
