Democratic San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom jumped into the race for governor today, taking the first steps toward succeeding Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010.
Newsom opened a gubernatorial campaign committee so that he can start gathering campaign contributions for a race that is more than two years away. Supporters can give him up to $24,100 each for the 2010 Democratic primary and general election. The next race for governor is expected to be a highly competitive contest that could cost each major party candidate upward of $30 million.
Newsom likely chose today to open a gubernatorial campaign account because July 1 was the start of a new state fund-raising period, which means he will not have to open up his new committee's books until next January, when his state-required campaign finance statement will be due.
That gives him plenty of time to amass a healthy pile of campaign contributions to prove to other Democrats he's a viable candidate - and perhaps persuade others to stay out of the race.
And, it virtually assures that Newsom's name will become more widely known by election day, when California voters will decide on Prop. 8, the same-sex marriage ban - highlighting an issue that helped make Newsom a national political figure.

The Democrats have to stop backing candidates that have skeletons in their closet. Newsome has a whole houseful. He's corrupt and sleazy.
Putting him in the Governor's office will allow him to grab prime real estate all over the place and hand it off to the likes of Lennar, with the help of Aunt Nancy.
After listening to Michael Savage who lives in San Fran sico. I believe the the mayor of that city should be put in the same cell as the Illegal Alien that murdered the father and 2 sons. The murderer was a 4 time looser that kept coming back to the Sanctuary of SFO after being deported. If we put Newsom in the same cell with the alien Newsom could explain the befifits of the Gay Rights in SFO. Ted
