Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

Mortgage Cheaters are Destroying America's Ethical Fiber
The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Saturday to reward liars, cheaters and criminals. Our government plans to grant final approval of a huge package of legislation that includes an ambitious program to save hundreds of thousands of borrowers from losing their homes to foreclosure. The measure now goes to President Bush, who has said he will sign it, perhaps early next week. It's good for the country. The nation's economy could be in real trouble without this help, but unfortunately, we are rewarding a bunch of crooks.
About the map: States suffering the highest number of foreclosures are shown in warmer colors. States with lower mortgage defaults are shown in cooler colors. It looks like the most honest Americans live in New England, where our founding fathers lived. Maybe we should learn from them. They seem to have better ethics than the rest of the country.
The majority of those home buyers would not be in their present state of affairs if they had not decided to short-cut their way to the American dream. They lied on their loan applications, lied about their income and knowingly defrauded and deceived everyone with whom they did business. They are - by definition - criminals.
This is the first time in American history (except all the many times Republicans have done it) that criminals have been officially rewarded by the United States Government. By rewarding them we invite more problems from then sometime later in life. We reward good behavior, not bad.
What happens to the honest and ethical people in America? Do they just get kicked in the face, booted to the back of the line and ignored? Is that America's answer to honesty and ethics in the 21st century?
We are on a parallel course to the one traveled by the Roman Empire as it slowly settled into decay and crept toward its demise. This may be the most significant evidence yet of the beginning of the decline and fall of the Empire of the United States of America. When our honesty and ethical fiber dissolves, the rest cannot be far behind.
If you would like to read about the decline and fall of the Roman Empire so you can make your own comparisons, I would like to refer you tothis excellent collection of highlighted portions and notations of Dr. Edward Gibbon's seminal work, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
If ever in the history of this nation we needed to change our course, this is the time. One more reason why - for the sake of our nation - we must elect Barack Obama President of the United States. We must stop the decline, restore America to ethical excellence and embrace our future together with the world, not fight the future and everyone in it.
