The University of California, San Francisco's nursing school won a five-year grant worth $4.25 million to study training for people who help the disabled.
This is the second such grant for UCSF's nursing school, led by Dean Kathleen Dracup.
UCSF will spend the money on its Center for Personal Assistance Services, which studies the availability and quality of both formal and informal caregivers for disabled people. In the past the center has done work that would let Medicaid pay for home and community services instead of automatic nursing home placement for some people. The center also found that personal assistants in this field were poorly paid, had poor benefits, and quit their jobs often.
UCSF School of Nursing was #1 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Funding for 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 (last rankings available according to UCSF website). The ranking covers research grants, awards, and contracts.
