College Shooting - Prelude to Murder at City College?

If a shooting can happen on campus at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, which has a total population of of 8,000 students - then it can happen at City College of San Francisco, which has a total population over 100,000 students.

When is CCSF going to allow their police officers to carry guns?

Right now, if some crazed student goes on a shooting rampage, the most CCSF police officers can do to protect our students is to throw rocks at the gunman, call the SFPD and wait. Is that the kind of protection the parents, grandparents, students and taxpayers of San Francisco expect?

No. Of course not. CCSF students are being under-served and under-protected and it's our fault for permitting the CCSF Trustees to get away with their short-sighted negligence.

Arizona officials say three people were shot Thursday afternoon at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix. The Phoenix Police Department said the shooting took place in the computing commons of the Technology Center building located at the southern end of the campus.

It took place around 4 p.m. when officers said Rodney Smith, 22, walked into the computer lab and picked a fight with the 19-year-old victim. Police said it appears the men have a long-standing feud.

“This was not a random act against the school or a classroom,” said Phoenix Det. Reuben Gonzales.

After shooting the victim, the suspect then shot a 20 year-old female and a 17-year-old boy before leaving the area, police and witnesses said.

“They've positively identified this person,” said Phoenix Det. Reuben Gonzales. Officers also said the suspect's father was also arrested. Yessenia Lara, an 18-year-old sophomore at the school, works in the computer lab where the shooting took place. She said recognized the suspect as a regular in the lab but didn't know his name.

Lara said the suspect and the 19-year-old got into a short verbal alternation during which the suspect pulled a gun and shot the victim. Lara said the suspect ran out, shooting the two additional victims. Lara ducked down behind the desk and heard the victims plead for somebody to call 911.

Anybody want to predict when the first murder-shooting will happen at City College? When it does happen and if the Board of Trustees have still refused to permit CCSF police officers to carry guns - then I hope the memory of lives needlessly lost mentally tortures those CCSF Trustees for the rest of their lives. It will be innocent student blood on their hands forever.

Sam, you are 100% correct. And while The do nothing board sits around doing nothing the best people that the college police have are leaving at an alarming rate for other police departments.

After reading about City College, I realize that this is one more good reason why CCSF is not a very good choice. The mortality risk is too great. This is a good lesson to high school students: work hard for good grades so you will be accepted at SFSU. If you're grades are not good enough, you may end up in the middle of a horror story.

I came here from the CBS-5 Eye on Blogs. I take a class at CCSF, but I can tell you I don't think I'm going to feel safe at City College anymore. Who ever heard of police officers without guns. That's like an iPhone with no battery - it's useless.

There have actually been two murders at City College. An instructor was shot and murdered April 12, 1982 by a disgruntled student.

A second murder occurred July 12, 2003. Two young men were shot by a machine gun wielding suspect in the parking lot next to Ocean Avenue. One died the other was severely wounded.

This does not included suicides and the many murders that have taken place around the Main Campus, the Mission Campus, the Hunterspoint Campus, Downtown Campus and John Adams Campus.
