Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

The Starbucks Coffee Co. has recalled about 167,000 of its "Fusion Coffee Mugs" because of a safety hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The CPSC said the plastic handle on the Chinese-manufactured mugs can detach when the mug is filled with hot liquid, posing a burn hazard.
Starbucks said it has received 23 reports of handles detaching from the mugs, including nine that resulted in minor burns.
The recalled 14-ounce mugs are white and have a black plastic handle, and a stainless steel base. The cups have "Starbucks Coffee" printed on a black stamp or a brown original Starbucks logo stamp.
The mugs were sold at Starbucks stores nationwide from February through November for about $11. Mugs with the original logo stamp were sold only inSeattle.
Consumers may contact Starbucks at for instructions on returning the cups for a full refund. Starbucks is also offering a free beverage as an incentive to return the recalled mugs.
Starbucks has been slipping lately. Not long ago they recalled chldren's mugs and also a coffee brewer. Their quality control has been lax.
