Following is the original 2008 story:
.
The newly rebuilt and re-designed California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is across from the world-renowned deYoung Museum and Golden Gate Park's famous Japanese Tea Garden. The new building is among the greenest buildings anywhere on the planet (a LEED Platinum -level building) and is among the most sophisticated science museums in the world. It is a definite, absolute, top-priority place to see in San Francisco!

.
A new chapter in the Academy's history has begun! Now that the doors are open, the building is bursting with human life as well as animal and plant life. Come nose-to-beak with penguins and parrots, watch sharks and rays cruise beneath your feet, and feel the spray of the California coast. Fly to Mars (and beyond the Milky Way!) from the safety of your planetarium seat, take a virtual safari in African Hall, or climb into the canopy of a living rainforest. From the depths of a Philippine coral reef to the outer reaches of the Universe, it's all inside the new California Academy of Sciences.
.
Hours are 9:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Saturday, and 11:00 am - 5:00 pm on Sunday. The Academy is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Museum Dining Redefined!
.
Renowned chefs Loretta Keller and Charles Phan are collaborating to run the casual Academy Cafe and the full-service Moss Room restaurant. Both venues are treated like exhibits, encouraging visitors to ponder the vital relationship between food and culture and to consider the benefits of eating sustainably. The Academy Cafe is open daily during regular museum hours. The Moss Room serves lunch daily from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm and, starting October 8, dinner from 5:30 pm - 10:00 pm. Reservations are recommended for The Moss Room; reserve today at OpenTable.com or 415.876.6121.
.
Wachovia Wednesdays?
.
The Academy is free to the public on the third Wednesday of each month, thanks to a sponsorship by the bank that, until yesterday, was Wachovia.
.
The first "Wachovia Wednesday" is planned for October 15 and the next is November 19th.

Dr. Jane Goodall - October 31st

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE and Dr. Toshisada Nishida will discuss the highlights of their pioneering careers. With the encouragement and mentoring of Dr. Louis Leakey, Dr. Goodall’s work began in 1960 and became the foundation for future primatological research. Dr. Nishida's research began in 1965 and established him as an authority on chimpanzee culture. Through their diligent work, these scientists have shaped the field of primatology and uncovered pivotal findings that help us better understand one of our closest living relatives, the chimpanzee. Leaky Prize Events
.
This fall, the Academy is hosting a series of Leakey Prize events in collaboration with the Leakey Foundation. The Leakey Prize is awarded to scientists whose work in ape and human evolution transcends the boundaries of his or her discipline. The 2008 recipients are Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Toshisada Nishida. From October 30 - November 1, join the Academy for a series of celebratory events, including a primatology film screening, lecture, public forum, and gala.Visit the Leakey Foundation website for details. Also see: Events and Lectures at the Academy
.
Tiny Assassins

Earlier this year, Academy scientist Charles Griswold and graduate student Hannah Wood traveled throughout Chile in search of assassin spiders - members of the family Mecysmaucheniidae that are infamous for hunting and stabbing their prey rather than trapping them in webs. Every morning, the two scientists gathered leaf litter and soil, spread it on a tarp, and waited for spiders to emerge. They caught more than 100 assassin spiders this way - practically equaling the number of South American specimens in all the world's collections. More about spiders and other arthropods.
