The Chinese Culture Center is proud to co-present: Cheers to Muses, an exhibit of art and writing from a soon-to-be-released anthology, by one of the nation’s leading Asian American arts organizations the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA). The exhibit showcases the new anthology of contemporary visual and literary art entitled Cheers to Muses: Contemporary Works by Asian American Women (expected publication: August 2007).

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
Curated by Cynthia Tom, the exhibit showcases work by select visual artists and writers from the anthology in tribute to the muses who have inspired their work. Exhibiting artists include: Cynthia Tom, Amy Lam, Christina Mazza, Susan Almazol, Lenore Chinn, Kay Kang, and Terry Acebo Davis. Writers include: Nancy Hom, Vanessa Merina, Olivia Boler, and Anh-Hoa Thi Nguyen.
• Cynthia Tom is a surrealist painter who draws inspiration from divergent cultures and the contradictions that implies. Her strong female images evoke a deep longing for freedom of expression and a life of choice. She honors Maya Lin, architect and creator of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, with these words: “Maya Lin informs my aspiration to be an outspoken Chinese American in my personal, business and artistic life….She demonstrated wisdom, courage and artistic vision as she faced scrutiny, criticism and slander.”
• Installations artist Terry Acebo Davis, uses printmaking in her tableaux. For inspiration she draws upon her identity as a woman of Filipina-American extraction influenced by Euro-American contemporary thought. She describes her muse, Dawn Nakanishi, metalsmith and installations artist, as “a ‘light’ to those that know her as: teacher, mentor, artist, sister, friend, swimmer, and cancer survivor.”
• Nancy Hom’s writing is published in several publications, including Cheers to Muses. As a visual artist, she has created numerous images for community events, political and social causes. She pays homage to Janice Mirikitani, activist and poet and President of the Glide Foundation here in San Francisco (Cecil Williams is her husband), in this way: “An outspoken supporter of women’s rights, she shows by example how women can overcome their feelings of helplessness and define power for themselves.”
• Susan Almazol is a writer, sculptor and teacher. She honors writer Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni, whose “writing strengthens my resolve to tell my truth in the complex ways I have lived it, growing up as I did in three continents – the Philippines, Japan and the United States.”
ABOUT CHEERS TO MUSES: What distinguishes this unique anthology from many others are the moving dedications, written by the contributors, to non-familial Asian American women whose lives or works have influenced and inspired their own. These heartfelt affirmations are a testament to the powerful influence these muses have had on the artists and writers, and remind us that we are part of a continuum of the Asian American woman’s struggle for independence and creative freedom.
Both the exhibition and the anthology support AAWAA’s mission to produce thought-provoking projects that challenge, inspire, and interpret the work of Asian American women artists.
