Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

Melinda Dootlittle and Nobody Else
Rosie O'Donnell saysAmerican Idolis racist. She thinks the producers discriminate against contestants of color. What? Has Rosie been watching this season?
So far none of the white girls onAmerican Idolthis season can sing at all. They're all lousy. It's the black females who are stealing the show ... particularly Melinda Doolittle, who is one of the strongest and best vocalists I have heard in a long time. She is a superstar and she doesn't needAmerican Idolto validate her extraordinary talent. The very close runner up is Lakisha Jones and she too is nothing short of stunning, but Melinda is the one to beat.
Jim Cantiello of MTV put it this way, "Think about it: Has anyone in the history ofAmerican Idolever been this consistently fantastic at this point in the show? Even Kelly Clarkson's early performances had a few wobbly moments. How Melinda doesn't already have a successful career as a solo artist, I'll never know."
Cantiello is right. How Melinda Doolittle has gone undiscovered is a mystery, but she is undiscovered no more. It won't be long before her debut album and when it arrives I'll be right in line to buy it.
Rosie didn't accuseAmerican Idolof being sexist, but she might as well have. This season there is not a single guy who can carry a tune in a 50-gallon drum. Let's send home all the guys and most of the girls and let Melinda sing a stunning duet with someone big enough to match her ... someone like Tony Bennett. They'd knock the socks off the American public.

Melinda Doolittle's debut due in January
American Idol alum Melinda Doolittle announced that she'll release her debut album, Coming Back to You, via Hi Fi Recordings in January.
The set was helmed by Mike Mangini, who's worked with the likes of soul temptress Joss Stone and teen-pop heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers. Doolittle's press folks describe it as "an R&B tour de force that combines the fiery electricity of Tina Turner’s early years with the slick production and lush instrumentation of today’s pop-soul renaissance." No pressure there, Melinda.
The album was put to tape here in Nashville and up in New York, the home base of Doolittle's label.
Doolittle, as one might imagine, is stoked about getting her first set of solo tunes done.
"I'm so excited to be using live instruments and to be singing music that really paints a picture,” the singer said in a statement. “I knew my task was to just go in the studio and be me and the music would take care of the rest."
