The Fast Response Cutter (FRC), a new generation of Coast Guard patrol boats, will continue the Coast Guard’s long history of protecting America’s citizens, assets and interests at home and abroad. The first FRC will be named the Coast Guard Cutter Sentinel, with the official class designation as the "Sentinel" class.

The Sentinel-class patrol boat acquisition is set to move forward following a ruling by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that upheld the Coast Guard’s decision to award the project’s contract to Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., of Lockport, Louisiana. In 2011, the Coast Guard plans to take delivery of a lead vessel, which will support operational test and evaluation of the Sentinel-class. The Sentinel is one of three new classes of vessels (including the National Security Cutter and the Offshore Patrol Cutter) that will modernize the Coast Guard’s cutter force.

The 153-foot Sentinel-class patrol boat will replace the 110-foot Island-class patrol boats, which have reached the end of their 20-year service lives. This contract award is valued at $88 million. If all options are exercised, the Coast Guard could order as many as 34 cutters on this contract, for a total approximate contract value of $1.5 billion.
