The Obama Administration will be likely be replicating major portions of California's Green policy which is currently leading the nation by example on energy efficiency and conservation, sustainability, green building and green purchasing practices.
Through California Executive Order S-20-04, known as the "Green Building Initiative," and the accompanying Green Building Action Plan, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger calls for public buildings to be 20 percent more energy efficient by 2015 and encourages the private sector to do the same.
In addition, the Governor created the Green Action Team to implement sustainable building practices and energy efficiency efforts statewide.
California, the eighth largest economy in the world, is an energy trendsetter for most of the globe, especially in renewable energy development. The state is blessed with indigenous renewable resources like wind and geothermal energy. The burgeoning wind energy industry began in the Golden State in the 1970s, and the state has more geothermal energy production than other countries, behind only Iceland. And today Californians have embarked on an ambitious "Million Solar Roof" initiative intended to capture California's sunshine. The program will create 3,000 megawatts of installed photovoltaic capacity by 2018.
The California Energy Almanac, published by the California Energy Commission, provides both a quick overview and in-depth statistics of California's Energy Industry.
While the California plan compliments President Obama's energy and environment plan, the President's plan is broader and more expansive than the California plan. Read the details of President Obama's Energy and Environment Plan here.
