Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

Conrado D. Javier Jr, 19, died in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan December 19, 2010
The following sad announcement was issued by the Department of Defense today. A local soldier has died in Afghanistan.
Pfc. Conrado D. Javier Jr., 19, of Marina, a town near Monterey, died Dec. 19 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.
He was little more than a boy in years, but in stature he towered above the greatest and grandest. He stepped forward, accepted responsibility for us all, and carried that commitment through to the greatest degree. He was a man, an American soldier and a hero. No other information was provided in this preliminary, initial announcement. For more information, please contact the US Army Europe public affairs office at 011-49-6221-57-7584 or email

This great man was my platoon leader in JROTC, and even gave me the nickname that has since followed me throughout highschool. He was a great friend, an even greater American and his sacrifice shall not go unnoticed. Conrado "The Demolisher" Javier, you are forever in our hearts, your family is forever in our prayers, and where ever you are, may you smile down on us from Heaven above. You'll be missed, and we love you.
It is 11:15 AM Pacific Time on Christmas Day. Here in San Francisco and it is calm and peaceful, just as it should be.
San Francisco and all America are peaceful this Christmas day because of great men the caliber of Conrado Javier. His was the greatest gift under our tree today.
He is a symbol of our Christmas Day peace not because he chose to be, but because of the overwhelming excellence of service and dedication he provided to the American people.
