I was fortunate enough to be able to see Ravi Shankar perform in San Francisco the first time he was here - back in the 1960s (yes ... I am that old) and I was again fortunate to see him with his daughter, Anoushka, last year at the Davies. The performances were fascinating, wonderful, exciting and uplifting. I'm going again this year.
Perhaps the most famous person from India and the world’s most important sitar player, Ravi Shankar has been a legend since the ‘60s — and his prominence has only continued to grow. He was the first Indian musician to have a profound impact on the West, and his influence on music history cannot be overstated. Bringing a nearly superhuman level of musical sophistication and joyous expressiveness to each recording and performance, he was a defining presence at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock and the famed Concert For Bangladesh. Currently celebrating his 90th birthday, Shankar has continued to be India’s chief musical ambassador, performing worldwide with his still-wondrous technique.
Ravi Shankar is 90. Ninety glorious years of the maestro. About his age, Ravi Shankar wrote:
Age is a cage where I sit
and watch my youth pass by.
Though I cannot run as fast as I did before,
musically I think I am better than ever for sure.
Should I be missing my youth,
or thank the Lord and rejoice in the
everlasting magic of the music.
Sharing the stage with the maestro May 19th is his daughter, Anoushka Shankar, an artist widely considered to represent the future of Indian music. After much critical acclaim, several Grammy nominations, and many collaborations with artists such as Sting, Lenny Kravitz, Norah Jones, Karsh Kale and Thievery Corporation, Anoushka brings the Shankar legacy to new horizons.
I'm also a big Anoushka fan. Check out her new album with Karsh Kale, Breathing Under Water
