Holidays in San Francisco 2010 -- ice skating, family entertainment, music, holiday dinners, theater -- plus New Year's Eve in The City!

(Updated 25 Dec 10) Now that Christmas has arrived (except for Othodox Christians who celebrate it on January 7th) it's time to focus on New Year's Eve.

Here are your New Year's Eve options in San Francisco. For anyone interested in what might have been, I've moved the now-outdated Christmas listings to the end of this post.

Happy New Year!

New Year's Eve in The City!

Holiday ice skating in San Francisco! This year we have two large outdoor ice skating rinks and one that is indoors at Yerba Buena Center. The other two are at Union Square and Embarcadero Center

Harry Denton's Starlight Room high atop the l on Union Square is always one of the popular choices for a great San Francisco New Year's Eve. This year Harry has a special menu planned for dinner (check out the menu here) and an evening of live music with Fred Ross and the Fred Ross Project. Ross has performed with Aretha Franklin, Carlos Santana and Chaka Kahn. Overlooks Union Square.

The St. Francis Hotel on Union Square has for a century been the place to be for a relaxed and elegant New Year's Eve Dinner in an elegant City. Reservations for the Oak Room are available from  5 to 10 PM with a special festive menu prepared by their world-class culinary team. The New Year's Eve Dinner is one of several events planned by the St. Francis during the holidays.

The Clubs on New Years's Eve!  Want to jump into the club scene on New Year's Eve? Check out this hot list (and latest discount info) from ClubZone. Your choices this year include everything from the NYE Ball at City Hall, Sin City 2011, NYE at Ruby Skye, Chat Noir Black and White Ball, Luscious Bash at Horizon, International Ball at the Palace Hotel, MegaNewYears at Suite 181, Destination at 888 Brannan, New Year's Eve Roller Disco at  CELLSpace and pages and pages more. Whew!

The Gay Bars on New Year's Eve are always packed solid with lots of hot, steamy, sexy shirtless bodies. Boy bodies. Bear bodies. Stud Bodies. Leather bodies. Daddy bodies. Cub bodies. Bare Bodies. All moving to the intense beat of the music. You have to deep-bump and slowly grind your way through the crowd to the bar. If this kind of experience gets your attention, then check out Bay Area Reporters Bar Tab. Check out this special Gay Nightlife Guide to New Year's Eve in San Francisco. Make no mistake about it. The hottest, wildest, most intense and fabulous parties in San Francisco are queer. If you're straight, but want to see what the Gay clubs are like, don't worry. You probably won't
see anybody you know and it is sooo worth it! So, come on, jump in!   (I am so scandalous)

The most select NYE event for Lesbians in San Francisco and throughout Northern California is Betty's List New Year's Eve Celebration. This year the event will take place at the Spinnaker in Sausalito. (The whole world knows Sausalito really has the best views in the Bay Area, but that's because they are looking across the Bay at San Francisco) This is a popular event, so don't dilly dally.

An excellent dinner choice if your plan is to spend New Year's Eve around the Union Square area is Farallon at , a half-block from Union Square. This is an excellent restaurant. It has a beautiful ocean-inspired interior design and a California cuisine menu that features locally grown foods. Take a look at the menu and see if Farallon is right for you.

Luce is another very elegant dining choice. Luce is in the new Intercontinental Hotel (the favorite of President Obama when he is in San Francisco. He has stayed there twice so far) at , near Moscone Center and Yerba Buena Gardens. Luce is offering a five-course prix-fixe menu for New Year's Eve and you can see the menu here.

The Top of the Mark at the Mark Hopkins Hotel at is another universally popular venue for New Year's Eve. Here's the menu for the New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance.

Would you like to spend New Year's Eve with active duty and retired Marines, their families, veterans of all branches of service and their families, and a mix of folks from just about everywhere you can imagine for a traditional American-style New Year's Eve?  The Marine's Memorial Club is the best place in San Francisco for you. At , the Marines Memorial is close to both Union Square and Nob Hill. Marines Memorial is a very well-managed, clean, safe and comfortable hotel with a restaurant and club that occupies the tenth and eleventh floors. They have a New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance that is always very popular so make reservations early. Dress uniform.

If you want to really go over the top in elegance and fine society this New Year's Eve, there is but one selection suitable to your needs, dear Sir or Madam: The New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball with the San Francisco Symphony. The Symphony provides the venue (the elegant Davies Symphony Hall), the music (of course) and the champagne. You create the memory. First there is a New Year's Eve concert by the San Francisco Symphony packed with surprises. Then, as the stage is cleared and transformed into a dance floor, the evening continues with non-stop music in the lobbies, free-flowing complimentary champaign and desserts everywhere, plus the traditional balloon drop at the stroke of midnight. Here's another chance to sing along to Auld Lang Syne and dance the night away on the stage at Davies Symphony Hall.     and ...

The Fairmont Hotel atop Nob Hill is offering a special deal for those planning to attend the SF Symphony Masquerade Ball. The Fairmont also offers several dining options that will not conflict with your timing for the Masquerade Ball.
