Following is the 2009 post:
They're selling live Dungeness crab right off the boats at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. While the catch is considerably smaller than a very long time ago when I was a boy (that's about 50 years ago), it is still a surprisingly bountiful catch and it's just in time for Christmas Dinner, San Francisco style.

The long-standing San Francisco tradition varies throughout our neighborhoods, but the old-school traditional menu includes big pots full of boiled Dungeness crab, Boudin's San Francisco sourdough French bread and lots of California wine.

Buying great live Dungeness crab: Inside tips from an old San Franciscan:

The best, most reliable and an affordable place to buy fresh live Dungeness crab at Fisherman's Wharf is the Alioto-Lazio Fish Company right on the water. They have been in business right where they are today for more than 50 years. Alioto-Lazio Fish Company is extremely rare in that it is a women owned and operated commercial fish company.

They are great people to do business with and they have a very efficient and popular worldwide online Dungeness crab business. They specialize in fresh seafood delivered overnight. You can also order petrale, halibut, sand sole and sand dabs. Find their online store at www.crabonline.com

You can also buy live Dungeness crab right off the fishing boats if that sounds like a romantic idea to you. Watch this KTVU Channel 2 video interview with some of the crabbers who sell their catch off the deck. You may also want to check out this resource from the Port of San Francisco.

Also take a look at another good resource for anyone planning to visit the Fisherman's Wharf / Ferry Building Marketplace corridor along the Embarcadero.

The real story (and best place) for San Francisco sourdough French bread:

Buying and eating Boudin Bakery's San Francisco sourdough French bread exclusively is a bigger deal than a lot of people realize ... it's a part of San Francisco's official history.

The original San Francisco sourdough bread was the creation of Isidore Boudin in 1849 in San Francisco, near Fisherman's Wharf. He was an artisan baker from Burgundy, France. Once in San Francisco he began blending the sourdough popular with the miners with French recipes. The result is one of the most famous breads on the planet.

So, this holiday season, don't buy supermarket imitation crap. Buy the true original San Francisco sourdough French bread from Boudin Bakery.

And the wine - yes! - the wonderful wine:

As for the wine, that's a very individual choice. Generally speaking, San Franciscans limit their choice of wine to a California wine and a nearby, local vintner. It will likely come as no surprise that most San Franciscans seem to prefer a wine originating in the Napa - Sonoma wonderland.

Other than these few concepts (not really rules), everything is wide open for you to fuse with your own ideas, cultural heritage and regional preferences - and doing so is the true San Francisco style - fusion.

Have fun and enjoy!
