David Gutierrez of San Francisco killed in Afghanistan

A 35-year-old soldier from San Francisco has died in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said Sunday Sgt. David Gutierrez died on Christmas Day in Kandahar from wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device went off. Gutierrez was on patrol in the town of Howz-e Madad at the time.

Gutierrez was assigned to a unit out of Fort Lewis, Wash. and had previously served in Iraq.
He was the father of three and played amateur football for the South Sound Shockers in Lacey, Wash.

Coach Steve Matychowiak told the San Francisco Chronicle he was a hard worker who never complained and put his team before himself.
