Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

USS Nimitz PBS Television Special
"It's the most expensive waterfront property in the world."
USS Nimitz (CVN-68)is a supercarrier in the United States Navy, the lead ship of its class. She is one of the largest warships in the world. Carrier, a new PBS television special coming to San Francisco's KQED Channel 9, spends six months on the USS Nimitz where more than 5,000 people coexist in this 24 story "big floating high school" on top of an aircraft hangar.
Personnel grapple with co-workers, families, conflict, faith, love and patriotism.
- "I have faith that the decision makers are sending me into harm's way with valid reason."
- "I don't get why we're fighting for someone else's freedom when we barely have our own."
- "If I didn't join the Navy … I might be dead or in jail … "
The deployment is at 9pm on KQED TV on Sunday, April 27, through Thursday, May 1. These are 10 of PBS' finest hours. Come aboard, and then share your stories about life on a carrier or military deployment at Carrier Story Share.
