The San Francisco St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival is the largest Irish event west of the Mississippi. With over four million Californians claiming Irish heritage, a million of them in the Bay Area alone, San Francisco’s St Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival has become one of the city’s largest, most popular and colorful annual events. This year’s parade is honored to have John Burton as its Grand Marshal, recognizing the California Democratic Party Chairman for his lifelong commitment to Irish issues.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival celebrates and showcases Irish community, culture and character in all its forms. In recent years the event has grown to attract thousands of people, featuring groups from throughout the Bay Area’s Irish community including: schools, youth organizations, labor unions, cultural groups, as well as the San Francisco police and fire departments and local civic, community and political leaders.
The day-long festival provides attendees an opportunity to learn about Irish history and culture. This year’s event will feature Irish cultural and retail booths, a healthy selection of Irish food, beer gardens and live music -- from rock to traditional Irish bands, as well as a multitude of activities for children including: pony rides, inflatable bounce houses and more.
“The San Francisco St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival has been a leading San Francisco attraction for many years,” said Diarmuid Philpott, president of the United Irish Societies of San Francisco and chair of the parade and festival. “This year’s exciting live-entertainment line-up, tasting and retail booths and, of course, the grand parade, offer a fun day for all ages. Whether you’re Irish or not, St Patrick’s Day is a wonderful, family-friendly celebration.”
Mark your calendars for March 13. The San Francisco Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival will take place, rain or shine.
