Big Changes at San Francisco MUNI

The San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which incorporates and oversees MUNI, is re-designing many of San Francisco's city transit bus routes. In terms of ridership, MUNI is the seventh largest transit agency in the United States with about 212 million rides annually.

MUNI's fleet includes its world-famous cable cars, historic street cars, the MUNI Metro light rail subway system, electric trolley buses and hybrid buses. MUNI has the largest fleet of electric trolley buses in the country and is the greenest transit agency in the country.

The Transit Effectiveness Project is a partnership between SFMTA and the Controller's Office of the City and County of San Francisco. This is the first comprehensive review of the City's transit system in 25 years.

According to Nathaniel Ford, SFMTA executive director, "We are undertaking the TEP with the aim of adjusting service to reflect the current and future needs of San Francisco’s transit riders. The TEP is a long-term commitment to implement changes that will improve the overall performance and financial stability of the SFMTA."

Rev. Dr. James McCray, Jr., Chairman of the SFMTA Board, said, "The SFMTA and your elected officials are currently engaged in an 18-month process aimed at improving the quality of transportation for San Francisco’s residents. We are taking a fresh and innovative look at how people travel - to get from home to work, school or recreation. As a result of this analysis, we will provide a more efficient service to get all Muni riding citizens to the important destinations around the city."

Track the Process

The TEP’s preliminary service and route proposals are now available for public review. The proposals aim to transform MUNI so people can get where they want to go quickly, reliably, and safely. The draft proposals and related materials are posted under Available Documents.

The TEP is pleased to announce that ridership data for each weekday service bus and rail line is now available online at www.sfmta.com/tepdata. From October 2006 to June 2007, the SFMTA captured a tremendous amount of information on its bus and rail lines, including exactly where San Franciscans are boarding vehicles and how many people are riding the system throughout the day.

TEP Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meetings are open to the public and are held on the second Thursday of the month from 5 to 7 pm at One South Van Ness, Room 3074. Visit Meetings for more information.

Interested neighborhood or community groups can request a TEP project briefing at any time, and the TEP team can provide content for organization newsletters, list serves or other publications by request. Please contact to request a briefing or newsletter article.
