Published since 2005. San Francisco is a city that belongs to the people of the world. Hence this blog has a global focus. The name "Sam Spade's San Francisco" refers to an exciting era in the City's history, the time of Dashiell Hammett's fictional gumshoe and San Francisco character, Sam Spade. My name is Tom Dunn and I edit the blog. I'm not as exciting as Sam Spade, but I am definitely a San Francisco character.Contact or on Twitter -- Search blog below.

Listen to Me Barack Obama!
The most stand-out thing I have seen in my life is live television coverage of the first human being to step foot on the moon. That was astonishing.
The most core penetrating and soul stirring political event of my late adult life was to witness the passing of theKennedy Blessingto Senator Barack Obama. It was a sublime moment in the history of this republic.
The Kennedy family is an integral fiber of the American fabric. To Americans of my generation this passing of the baton to Senator Obama is the hope of Camelot reborn.
I'm the son of a minor politician and as a schoolboy I had the singular honor of briefly meeting John F. Kennedy. Later, as a young voter, I campaigned for Robert F. Kennedy and I met him two days before his assassination in 1968.
In 2006 I wrote an article in this blog explaining why I am convinced that Barack Obama is our best hope since RFK. I can't tell you how elated I am that Robert and John Kennedy's brother, Senator Ted Kennedy and President John Kennedy's daughter, Caroline, have made the decision to endorse and pass the Kennedy hopes and dreams - to pass theDream of Camelot- to Barack Obama.
I'm an old San Francisco gay-rights pioneer and Democratic Party campaign foot soldier who believes in and endorses Barack Obama with more certainty and conviction and determination than I have been able to muster since the Kennedy campaigns.
So, listen to me Candidate Obama:
I want you to do better than President John F. Kennedy did when he astonished us by sending an American to the moon. I want one better from you!
I want you to be the president who extends full marriage equality to me and to my husband and to all gay and lesbian Americans. I want everyone included in the American dream: Transgender Americans, Gay Americans, Lesbian Americans, Bisexual Americans and Straight Americans. I want justice. I want one better from you!
I want you to fight for all the people of the world to have a fair and just and equal economy that respects their inherent dignity. I want one better from you!
I want you to be a president who will lead us in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s challenge to develop a new standard of excellence - one that calls us to serve one another in place of the tired, old drum major instinct that drives so many of us. The old standard doesn't serve us well. I want one better from you!
With these expectations in mind, Candidate Obama, I give you the totality of my support for election to the Presidency of these, our United States of America.
God bless you, sir, and God bless this America, our home.
-Thomas Dunn, Sam Spade's San Francisco
