The Red Cross Bay Area Chapter was working on setting up an emergency shelter for fire victims less than an hour after the San Bruno gas line erupted into a massive ball of fire. The Red Cross immediately jumped into action and stockpiles were accessed to provide everything the victims would be needing as night approached.
Victims began been arriving at local hospitals. Houses were burned to the ground. The Red Cross set up shelters and emergency response centers at the Veterans Memorial Recreation Center and at the Bay Hill Shopping Center. The Red Cross was there to help right from the beginning.
This is another example of why --- whenever a disaster strikes --- we rely upon and we need the Red Cross.
This is a major disaster and the healing process is going to take many months. Please begin helping today. Make a commitment to the Red Cross.
.
Here's how you can help:
At this time the victims do not need used clothes donations, furniture donations or food donations. The Red Cross has a large stockpile of everything the fire victims will be needing over the next few weeks. Additionally, the fire victims, like anyone else, would rather buy new clothes for themselves and their families than be given bags of used donations.
Over the next couple of months there will be a big need, but you can only help that "big need" with your money. Please be as generous as you can.

Or you can simply do this:
If you are considering a donation of $100 or more you can buy a couple of tickets ($50 each) to the Red Cross Bay Area Chapter's San Francisco Heroes Breakfast on September 23rd at the Marine's Memorial Club at 609 Sutter Street, San Francisco. ()
Your donation will help the Red Cross help people and replenish their stockpiles. Go in person and thank the Red Cross and our local heroes. Learn more here. Buy tickets here.

Can I drive in person to donate items? I have clothes I can donate, I can buy needed products. What do you need?
Because we live in a major earthquake area, The American Red Cross, Bay Area Chapter, has a lot of emergency supplies stockpiled. They do not need blankets and basic items like that. They need money to replenish the stockpiles.
Don't jump in the car with a bag of clothes. Jump into your wallet or purse and send them a bag of money.
If you cannot afford a bag of money, how about sending them a few dollars -- whatever you can afford -- because money is what they really need.
CNN Headline News sometimes does more harm than good. Some idiot CNN correspondent is on the air this morning in San Bruno standing in front of a pile of bags filled with old clothes. He repeatedly mentions the pile of bags and reports that "people are coming down here and donating clothes for the victims".
That kind of sensationalism is producing unfortunate responses. People are stuffing plastic garbage bags with the old clothes they don't want and taking them down and dumping them in a pile for the fire victims.
Old clothes are not needed. Don't do spring housecleaning and bring your old stuff and claim it is a donation for the fire victims. They do NOT need your old clothes -- or bottle of water, cans of beans or any other idea someone may come up with.
Dig into your wallet or purse, not your closet.
The fire victims need money. They do not need your old stuff.
