U. S. Coast Guard in SF honors CG-6505 - photos

Chief Petty Officer Miles Beardsley, an aviation survival technician from Air Station San Francisco, holds the Coast Guard ensign over San Francisco Bay, on May 13, 2009, to honor the Honolulu-based helicopter crew who perished in an accident in September 2008. The Coast Guard ensign also was hoisted over a Coast Guard boat while underway in San Francisco Bay. The flags are being sent to all Coast Guard Air Stations around the United States and Puerto Rico so that each may honor the fallen crew of Coast Guard helicopter 6505. Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco flies five Coast Guard ensigns at the Golden Gate Bridge Visitor Center Thursday, May 14, 2009, to honor the Honolulu-based helicopter crew who perished in an accident in September 2008. Four ensigns will be presented to the families of the fallen crewmembers and one will be displayed at Air Station Barbers Point, Hawaii, as a memorial. The flags are being sent to all Coast Guard Air Stations around the United States so that each may honor the fallen crew of Coast Guard helicopter 6505. The ceremony took place not far from the San Francisco National Cemetery where 30,000 graves of American heroes lay, including the graves of 35 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.
