The public can now report potential fraudulent tax activities online announced the Franchise Tax Board (FTB).
Informants can now complete questions under “Report Tax Fraud” at their convenience on FTB’s website,www.ftb.ca.gov.
On the average, FTB receives more than 200 tips each month from informants about potentially fraudulent tax activities of individuals, businesses, and tax practitioners. The most valuable tips also include supporting records.
The largest portion of the annual $6.5 billion tax gap, the total amount of taxes owed but not paid, is due to underreported income. Examples include failing to report income received, not filing tax returns, and preparing documents, books, and records that understate the true income or overstate the expenses of a business.
Due to disclosure and privacy laws, results of any action taken are generally not provided. FTB does not offer rewards. All tips are assigned a reference number that informants should use when making any additions to information, or when providing supporting records.
Informants can also call the Tax Informant Hotline at 800.540.3453 weekdays from 8:30 AM to 4 PM
Supporting records may be faxed to 916.843.2060 or mailed to FTB, PO Box 1565, Rancho Cordova, CA 95741.ordova CA 95741
